JACK NESSEL Obituary

NESSEL--Jack H., of New York, NY and Canaan, CT, on March 27, 2012 at the age of 73. Born and raised in Long Beach, California, he graduated from Stanford University in 1959. He did graduate studies at Harvard Law School and at UC Berkeley, and worked at KPFA Pacifica radio. Jack was the first managing editor of New York Magazine from 1968 to 1972 and its editorial director from 1974 to 1977. He was the editor-in-chief of Psychology Today from 1977 to 1982, and a senior consulting editor on the start-up of Conde Nast Traveler. In 1973 he was an Alicia Patterson Foundation fellow in Paris. He was also a guest lecturer at NYU, Yale, the Stanford Publishing Program, and the Aspen Institute. In a second career, he became an antiquarian bookseller and was a member of the ABAA. Jack did crossword puzzles rapidly and in ink. He loved carnivals, mysteries, old radio, and old movies, especially “The Thief of Bagdad,� and as an infant he appeared in the movie “Another Thin Man.� Jack will be missed immensely by his wife, Ginger Curwen; daughter, Jen, her partner, Matt, and their son, Oscar; Ginger's family; and a group of very dear friends. The family requests that any donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
