JANET SEGAL Obituary

SEGAL--Janet Zimmerman, former chief operating officer of Four Winds Hospital, Katonah, NY, accomplished pianist with an encyclopedic knowledge of classical music and a steadfast, loving and healing presence in her family and among her friends and colleagues, passed away peacefully May 2 from vascular dementia. She was 92. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Janet excelled at the piano starting at the age of five. She attended Bard College, following in the footsteps of her late sister, Irene, and graduated with a B.A. in piano performance. Bard is also where she met her future husband and a boisterous fun-loving group of lifelong friends. She married the late John B. Segal in 1954 and worked as a music programmer for WQXR radio in New York City. After moving to Larchmont, NY with three young children, Janet taught piano part-time and immersed herself in family life, leading a rich social life and becoming actively involved in the local Democratic party. Interested in mental health issues, she studied Pastoral Counseling at Iona College and received an MS in Education. After working at a mental health clinic, she completed a MS in Social Work at Fordham University. In 1979, she joined the staff of Four Winds Hospital and remained there for the next three decades, as director of social work, director of clinical services, COO overseeing all clinical and marketing services, and executive vice president emerita. Janet is survived by her children, John B. Segal, Jr. (Robyn Paul Segal), Jeanne Segal (Tom Trainer), and Joanne Segal Fryer (the late Gary Fryer) and special niece and nephew Polly Segal and Nicholas Segal, in addition to seven grandchildren, Adam Segal, William Segal, Matthew Fryer, Jenny Fryer, Rebecca Fryer, Eliza Trainer and Ben Trainer. Her beloved husband of 50 years, John, predeceased her in 2005. Janet's family is deeply grateful for the loving care provided by Rose Marie Martin, Lydia Alexander and Yvonne Easy who together sustained and supported her as she navigated her final years. A memorial service to honor her life will be held on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at 3pm in Larchmont. For details on the service, please email: [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Community Counseling Center of Larchmont Mamaroneck www.communitycounselingcenter.org and the National Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence in Westchester www.ncaddwestchester.org

Four Winds Hospitals mourn the loss of Janet Z. Segal, LCSW
Janet was an integral part of the Four Winds community. She was an extraordinary person who made an extraordinary commitment to mental health through her brilliant leadership, profound compassion, unwavering commitment and tireless energy. She was a mentor to many and the driving force behind shaping the clinical work at the hospital. Janet was an advocate for patients and understood the importance of working with families to improve patient outcomes.
She was a true role model for women in the workforce and her legacy and work at Four Winds will influence our work in the future.
Our thoughts are with Janet´s family at this time.
