JOHN DEMARAY Obituary
died October 24 at Lennox Hill Hospital of bilateral pneumonia. Writer, Renaissance scholar, professor Emeritus, Rutgers University, and gentle man, he was the intensely loved and wonderfully loving husband for 55 years to Hannah Disinger Demaray; and the best of sons to John and Marjorie Coyle Demaray of Somerville, NJ. After the Army, and Notre Dame Law School, he earned his Ph.D with honors at Columbia where he met Hannah. Years of adventure, reflection, and writing began--all leavened with humor and Jack's pleasure in magic. "Gladly would he learn and gladly teach"-- and so he did at universities in Cairo, Beirut, Damascus, Florence, Los Angeles, Kentucky, and New Jersey. His many books on Shaw, Milton, Dante and Shakespeare were about philosophy, pilgrimage, history, and literary genre. His life was about integrity, faith, and love. He retained, even in his final illness, anachronistic courtliness, geniality, and devotion. He is survived by his wife, several cousins, and many friends. Funeral November 7, 2:00pm, Church of the Ascension, 5th Ave. and 10th St.
