LEVI KELLER Obituary

KELLER--Levi, physicist, Yiddish culture enthusiast and friend to many, passed away in New York City on January 28, 2023 after a battle with glioblastoma. He was 37. Levi's fierce intellect, boundless curiosity, kindness, generosity and lebedikayt (vivacity) bettered the lives of everyone he met. He was born July 31, 1985, raised in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. He attended Oholei Torah and held the distinct honor of being expelled from the yeshiva twice. He earned a dual bachelor's degree in history and anthropology from Brooklyn College and a master's degree in physics from the University of Helsinki. He pursued doctoral studies in computational physics and spectroscopy at Helsinki's Aalto University. In 2021, he moved to Germany to conduct research at Technical University of Dresden in tandem with colleagues at Aalto. Levi was fluent in five languages and had a passion for Yiddish poetry and music. He found community in Dresden's arts scene. After his diagnosis in June 2022, Levi fought to live. Dozens of family members and friends in Europe and the United States who joined him on his medical journey are a testament to the loving person he was.

Levi and I met in Germany last year at a Yiddish cultural event. I'll always remember the first night we hung out. We sat together drinking and laughing and discussing Yiddish literature and music. In the short time I knew him, he taught me so much and showed me little random acts of kindness all throughout the trip. I'm so grateful that he and I crossed paths. May his memory forever be a blessing, just as he has blessed all of the people who had the fortune of getting to know him, even if for just a short time. Levi, you will be forever missed and I'll never forget you.

Levi was the older brother I never had, the teacher I always dreamed of having, and the friend we should all be so lucky to have. His absence has left a massive void in my life and the lives of all who knew him. I will miss him forever.
