LISA GRANEY Obituary

GRANEY--Lisa, 1923 - 2013 Lisa Graney died Sunday, October 27th, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The cause of death was complications due to lung disease. Liselotte Margarete Susman was born January 11, 1923 in Mannheim, Germany. She lived with her family in Landau in der Pfalz until 1931, when the rise of the Nazi party forced the family's move to Milan, Italy. In 1938, Lisa went to London. Early in World War II, Lisa, a German citizen, was interned on the Isle of Man. Released in the summer of 1941, Lisa completed her nanny training. In 1945, she became a U.S. Army postal censor in occupied Germany. Stationed in Berlin, she eventually ended up in New York City. Her 1951 marriage to John F. Graney, Jr. ended in divorce, but she remained a Graney to the end of her days. In addition to her husband, Ronald Hahn, Lisa is survived by her son John (Laurel), granddaughters Rachel and Robin Graney of Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and her son Daniel (Wendy), and granddaughters Rebecca and Naomi Graney, of East Quogue, New York. She leaves two stepsons, Dave Hahn of Taos, New Mexico and Harold Hahn of Kingston, New York, and stepdaughter Carolyn Hahn, of New York City. Lisa's older brother, Peter, died in 1975. Her younger brother, George, died in 1957. A memorial service will be held at Vassar Temple, 140 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, on Sunday, November 24, 2013 at 1pm. Interment will be private. Lisa was my stepmother for 33 years. So wise, so generous. Every year I had her in my life was a gift....the things she knew were right, she did. My life was changed/re-directed/saved by her love and energy. I hope to give to the world some tiny shred of what she gave....

To Ron and Lisa's Family,

I was wondering how Lisa was today and decided to look for her online. I was brought to tears to read of her passing. She was always very kind to me and to my children. She knew what it was like to raise children as a single mother. I wish I knew her longer and am so saddened by her passing.

Dear Daniel:
I remember fondly times in Waldwick when your mom and I would chat. She was a feisty one with a no-nonsense attitude underneath which was a wise and kind heart. My deepest condolences to you and your family.

We recall Lisa as one who showed kindness to everyone she met. She also had a stamina that enabled her to do many different things well. Several years have past since we went different ways, but we fondly remember those earlier times.

Aunt Lisa was an amazing woman and being connected to her in my life is something I am proud of. Aunt Lisa connected me to my Grandpa Peter who I didn't meet and because of her I know where my roots come from. I am so proud to be part of a family that Lisa was in, such an adventurous, kind, and insightful influence to my life.

My Aunt Lisa was an amazing and loving woman. A woman who I have admired all my life. The memory I have of Lisa was that she was always interested in keeping our family together. She traveled to many places for our special family get-togethers. Bar Mitzvahs, Weddings, Funerals, even to my son Mark's ordination in Rabbinical School. Lisa is a role model I hope to follow in many ways. I will miss you.
