LOIS SMILEY Obituary

SMILEY--Lois Gross, 93, of Wellesley MA, died at home on January 2 2019. She is survived by her three grandsons, Jeffrey Higgins, Michael Higgins and Aiden Rogatz, along with nephews, a niece and sons-in-law. Lois was an abstract expressionist painter of exceptional discernment and skill. The vivid, enigmatic prisms of color and light in her oil and pastel landscapes filled our lives with beauty. Born in New York City in 1925, Lois attended Dalton School and received a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College, where she majored in painting. Beginning in high school, she studied with superb painters including Rufino Tamayo, Vaclav Vytlacil and Kurt Roesch. In the 1970s she was an assistant curator at the Hudson River Museum and won awards for her watercolors, which she also exhibited at the National Academy in NYC. She was a member of the National Art Association and the National Association of Women Artists. Lois moved to Massachusetts in 1991 following the death of her husband, Dr. Douglas Smiley. She exhibited and taught drawing in the Greater Boston area and on Martha's Vineyard, where for many years she spent wonderful summers overlooking Squibnocket Beach. To Jeffrey, Michael and Aiden, Lois was an ever-attentive, ever- accepting grandmother who listened to all the stories, remembered the details, laughed when she was beaten at cards, supported everyone in their battles, and felt sadness for their sorrows. Lois also took unending delight in her two daughters, Andrea and Laura, whom she loved and cared for until they both died of cancer--Laura first, in 2013, and Andrea in April of last year. Lois herself was brave and beautiful until the very end. We learned so much from her and we will always love her.

Dear Family of Lois
What a strong brave creative soul. We shared many laughs and continue to be connected through gardening and painting and a shared education although 30 years apart at Sarah Lawrence College. Also Lois organized a drawing session for years at her studio on Broadway next door to Zabars! There in her studio Lois generously created a wonderful community in her space- all of us drawing from the model and she a serious teacher for us all. I visited her on Martha's Vineyard and loved the Vitlacil cottage she rented and treasured. Also I came to love and still do the Mohonk Mountain House thanks to her introduction to that magnificent world. A very inspiring artist she will remain and I treasure her pieces which I nod to frequently.
Sending my love to her sons in law and grandsons . Brave ones.

Dear Smiley family, Condolences on the loss of Lois. She was a next door neighbor of my parents, Jack and June Bingham, for many years. She was a good friend of my mother June. The Smileys alerted my parents to a fire on their third floor which saved the whole house from burning. Lois was a lovely lady who inspired all of us Bingham children. I know you have heard from my sister but I wanted to add to what she said. My heart goes out to all of her grandsons and the entire family. xxoo

Dear relatives of Lois, my sincere sympathies! I love your grandma, aunt, delightful elder friend. My parents and siblings lived next to your family in Riverdale I used to babysit Andrea and Laura. And I inherited a painting of Lois's after my Mom, (June Bingham) died. Lois was a very important person for me! I will do kaddish for her, and welcome any of you to get in touch with me if there's anyway I can be of service in these times of huge transition for you. She knew me as Claudia and now i go by rahmaneh
