MARK HEANEY Obituary

HEANEY--Mark. Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons celebrates the life and mourns the untimely passing of our friend and colleague Mark L. Heaney, MD, an extraordinary doctor who pushed forward the frontiers of cancer medicine. He joined our faculty in 2013 as a member of the Division of Hematology and Oncology within the Department of Medicine, and was internationally recognized for his research in the area of mast cell diseases and histiocytic neoplasms. A leader in employing translational research, his clinical practice provided the largest patient base for the Division's groundbreaking clinical trial programs targeting rare diseases. Dr. Heaney directed our Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship Program, the largest fellowship program at NewYork-Pres- byterian and one of the most selective programs of its kind in the nation. He was an empathic clinician, a valued mentor, a pioneering researcher, and a trusted colleague. We offer our condolences to his wife, Tone Lindgren; their children, Thomas, Kristin, and Katie; his sister, Gretta, and brother, Peter; and the extended Heaney family. Katrina Armstrong, MD, Dean of the Faculties of Health Sciences and the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons; Gary K. Schwartz, MD, Chief, Division of Hematology/Oncology; Donald W. Landry, MD, PhD, Chair, Department of Medicine; Anil K. Rustgi, MD; Director, Columbia University Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center

I was diagnosed with Leukemia in Albany, NY. The local oncology group gave me an appointment in two weeks. I called Dr. Heaney´s office for an appointment. After looking at my medical records (the same day) he personally called me and asked me to come in the very next day. I think that sums up Dr. Heaney´s empathy, compassion and his selfless care for his patients. I cried upon hearing the sad news. He was more than just a Dr to me. He saved my life.

I am truly saddened by the loss of such a wonderful, kindhearted soul. Dr. Heaney had an uncanny way of making me feel calm even when my blood counts weren´t that great, aside from my family he was one of the most important people in my life. I thank you for helping me. Rest peacefully kind soul.

I have been a patient of Dr. Heaney´s for 15+ years. He was currently overseeing my latest treatment for HCL even though I now live in Hong Kong. He always went above and beyond and made everyone feel like they were his only patient. My heart breaks for his family, fellow patients and colleagues. The world lost a wonderful Doctor and all around good human.
Rest In Peace Doc.

Dr. Heaney was my brothers oncologist at Sloan Kettering. My brother, Dr. Jay Steinberg, adored Dr. Heaney. He took such good care of him. When my brother passed, Dr. Heaney and some of his stuff attended Jays funeral. Not too many doctors take the time to do that. He was a very special man...my condolences to the entire family. He will be missed my many!!

Dr. Heaney was an exceptional doctor and care giver. He made sure I was able to join a trial medication study for the treatment of Systemic Mastocytosis. He truly wanted to help his patient's find some degree of comfort. He dedicated himself to a cure for so many types of cancer.
I would like to thank his family for sharing him with so many other people. His passing has left a void, that will be hard to fill. He will not be forgotten.

Dr. Heaney was my mentor during fellowship training and it was such an honor to be trained by such a master clinician. Not only did he have tremendous experience caring for a variety of extremely rare diseases, but he was the most empathetic physician with the gentlest and most caring bedside manner. Mark continued to be someone I could go to after my fellowship for advice. His passing is tragic and is a huge loss to medicine and to all of us who had the pleasure to know him. I will remember the time I spent under his mentorship forever and hope to honor his memory by emulating the spirit with which he approached patient care. Mark was a lovely human being and he will be deeply missed. My deepest condolences to his family.

Dr. Heaney has been treating my father for a rare blood cancer for several years. We visited multiple hematologists and the second we met Dr. Heaney we were instantly at ease. Not only was he a
Genius in the space, he was empathetic and always made us comfortable. He also would make helpful suggestions for his other co-mordibities. We were so sad to hear of his passing and hope his family knows just how many lives he touched. Sending our condolences to all who knew him, may he Rest In Peace.

I am a patient. I am devastated by this news. He was a rare human being who elevated the practice of medicine and touched us all with his kindness and empathy. He set a high bar. Condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. He will live in the hearts of all of us. He has earned his seat in heaven.
