MARK TAVEL Obituary

TAVEL--Mark Kivey,

passed away after a short battle with cancer. He was 72. Mark was born on May 9, 1945, and grew up in Dorchester, MA. He attended Boston Latin School, where he was a proud member of the Aardvark Club. After graduating from Harvard cum laude ('67) and Columbia Business School ('68), he set out to write the next "great American novel" while raising organic vegetables on a farm in Bucks County, PA. However, it was his talent for numbers that took him from pastures to Wall Street. As head of money management at Value Line, he met his wife, Susana Dono Tavel. They married in New York City and went on to have five children. After 20 years at Value Line, he became one of the founders of Rothschild Asset Management, where he worked as managing director until retirement in May 2017. He loved his family, reading, cheering on his Boston sports teams, and enjoying the cultural attractions of New York City. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, his children, Sarah, Rachel, Amanda, Nathaniel and Roberto, and brother, David.

So sorry to hear about Mark´s passing. I met him at VL in `82 and admired his work on Leveraged Growth. I worked in mutual funds and with financial advisors in the infancy of the business.
I remember Mark agreed to speak at the first Money Show in San Francisco at my request for one of large mutual fund clients. I walked into work early one Monday and Mark called me and said come to my office now! I went and he told me he couldn´t do the speech and told me "you do it"! So I left the office with the speech and went directly to JFK with no luggage and delivered the speech that afternoon at the Fairmont .I shared the podium with Mike Prector(the harmonic wave) , I remember giving his brilliant speech with a joke and only one person
laughed! Loved him , he was good to me.

I am so sorry to hear about Mark's passing. I have delightful memories of Mark's trailblazing ideas for the New York Chapter of BLS Alumni/ae. He was absolutely committed to keeping Alma Mater close to those who ventured to the NY area. He was a devotee of the theatre and brought about so many successful family-friendly fundraising events to support Alma Mater. I have always admired Mark - his intelligence, character and devotion to all near and dear to his heart. I am confident that he is a strong spirit and advocate in Heaven. He will always have voice and exemplary deeds here among us. Heartfelt condolences to his beautiful Susana and amazing children.

My prayers go out to Mark's family. Our company was a long time client of Mark's firm and I had many phone calls with Mark surrounding our portfolio. He was very much a gentleman in every sense of the word. He will be missed.

Susana, Rachel, Amanda, Sarah, Nate, & Robo,
It has taken me a few days to come to terms with the loss of my dear friend, who was first a business contact and soon after a very special person in my world. How could he not have been special. We connected because of our values and the importance of ethics and above all the love of our families. He was of the same religious faith, one year younger and also a May baby. When my husband and I dined with Nate, Robo and Susana, it was the cementing of a bond. We communicated continually about our families. I was lucky enough to receive every published and unpublished point of interest about all of you. I used to refer to myself as Aunt Irene. As a cancer survivor myself, we had another bond. Always brilliant, aware and rational, he knew what he was facing. Each and every one of you gave him the courage to face the challenge. I prayed he would beat it. I am crushed he did not. In our last email correspondence from Sloan Kettering, when it was obvious to me he was well aware of the little time he had left, he was only concerned about you, Susana, how capable you are and how much you have had to bear in the last months. His joy in the growth of his Grandchild in utero, the pride in all of his kids.
The achievements of his offspring. I even have your speech at graduation, Robo. I express all of this knowing there is little comfort in my lond diatribe. I just want you to know that he knew you all, each one of you, lived up to his high expectations, gave him endless joy and will continue to be a tribute to his memory. Like each of you, I will treasure everything I shared with him and, vicariously, with each of you. I hope the grief you feel, will be replaced by wonderful memories and future successes in tribute to his dreams of fulfillment for each of you. I will regret not having frequent reports about the achievements and joys of the Tavel family. Susana, the biggest impact of this tragedy is yours to bear. Mark said you are the strongest, most positive person he ever knew. I wish you the strength to get over this pain. The birth of your grandchild and the love of your children and your family here and in Argentina, will hopefully ease the burden.
With great sadness ,
Irene

So sorry to hear of Mark's passing. It seems like only yesterday that we were together at Boston Latin and at the YMHA-Hecht House Aardvarks, and at his and Susana's gracious home in NYC. He has left a hole in all our hearts -- a hole that can never be entirely filled.

So sad at the news of Mark's passing. He was a generous friend, delightful company, and a loyal and devoted alumnus of Boston Latin School. He was a cherished mainstay for many years of our BLS New York alumni board of directors, and will be much missed. Sincere condolences to his beloved family, and many friends and colleagues.
