MARTIN MESSINGER Obituary

MESSINGER--Martin P., age 66, of New York City and East Hampton, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 19, 2015 at his home in East Hampton, New York. Marty was born in the Bronx, New York to Roslyn Cohen and Hyman Messinger. He grew up in Bayside, Queens along with his brother, Joel Messinger, and attended Bayside High School before earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Bridgeport and his juris doctorate from St. John's University School of Law. He was admitted to the New York Bar in 1975. Marty began his remarkable 36-year career with Westinghouse Broadcasting and CBS in 1978. Prior to retiring in December 2014, he had served as Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for CBS since 1996; and chief legal officer for the CBS Television Stations group since the division was formed in 2000. Marty also served as CBS Corporation's first Chief Compliance Officer for four years, following the company's separation from Viacom in December 2005. He joined the CBS Law Department in 1996, following the merger of CBS and Westinghouse. Prior to that, he was Vice President and General Counsel of Westinghouse Broadcasting (Group W). He played a key role in the merger of CBS and Group W, the merger of CBS with Infinity Broadcasting and numerous other significant transactions. Prior to joining Group W in 1978, Marty practiced corporate law at the Wall Street law firm Sullivan & Cromwell. The counseling and representation CBS's stations received under Marty's leadership was the best in the business. As much as his commitment to professional excellence, Marty was also revered for his deep commitment to being a friend and mentor to those around him and taking a genuine interest in the lives and careers of colleagues throughout the company. Marty's greatest pride and joy was his family. He was a devoted, involved and incredibly proud father to his children Nicole, Christopher and John, and a beaming grandfather to Nicole and her husband Bryn Harder's three daughters, Madelyn, Ruby and Layla. He is also survived by his lifelong friend, and the mother of his three children, Lupe Abuchaibe. Marty was a brilliant, intellectually curious and deeply funny man. His passion for books was evident to anyone who ever entered his home and his love for movies was also well known. He was a lifelong fan of the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Giants, the Rangers and Knicks, and all things sports. Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Saturday, July 25 at Most Holy Trinity Church in East Hampton, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital or Save the Children, two charities that were favorites of Marty.

Just rereading Marty's obit and seeing that how he was described is just how he was as a kid--really smart, funny, creative, generous. I was recalling us watching a Mets-Dodgers game and his commenting that Frank Howard's prodigious home run "hit the moon on a short hop." Watching the 1963 World Series we turned off the sound and did the play by play and color ourselves. We thought we knew more than Mel Allen and Red Barber. And in a non-sports moment, Marty orchestrated an Army game with any boy that was around--athletes, non-athletes, big and little kids. I'm pretty sure Joel was part of that. (No girls, sorry). He found roles for everyone based on age, maturity, personality and improvised some dramatic and creative action and dialogue. I miss him and regret not connecting with him as an adult. May his spirit be completely free and may his memory continue to be a blessing.

I am a very old friend of Marty's from Bayside and although he was almost four years older we had a great connection. For me he was an older brother and mentor. I became a Dodger fan and we shared the pain of '62 and the ecstasy of '63. We played every variety of baseball, football, basketball, bowling, tennis golf, and our families were close for several years. I last spoke to Marty in 1967 after his freshman year when i left the old neighborhood. Then on his birthday this year, i googled him and got the news. So sorry and so young for such a vital being with such a great spirit. I am a psychiatrist living in the Boston area since 1979 and would love to hear from you if you are so moved (lapeltz52 @gmail.com). Wishing you all much comfort of heart.

Lupe,
This is Martin's cousin Lynne (My dad was his father's brother, Mendel).
It's true we lost touch with Martin for some years, not sure how it happened, but was very saddened and shocked to see this obituary this morning! It was forwarded to me by my sister Randy who received it from another cousin, Andy Messinger.
Please know, that my sadness and thoughts go out to you and your family at this time.
I will be thinking of all of you at this time, and my childhood memories will hopefully help alleviate some of the sadness.
We spent so many good times growing up together with his mother & father and his brother Joel .

Marty was one of the most down-to-earth, generous people I've ever had the pleasure to know and work with. His kindness to me on 9/11 really helped me not end up in Bellevue! Seriously - he helped many people that day by just taking the lead and calming everyone down - a monumental task and achievement. Such was Marty's way - to be there for people. I am very sad to hear about his untimely passing and I hope beautiful memories of his wonderful spirit help his family and friends get through this most difficult time.
