NEYLAN BALI Obituary

BALI--Neylan Ayse. (1939-2025). Neylan A. Bali, former Director of the United Nations Security Council Affairs Division, passed away on April 3, 2025, at her home in New York City. She is survived by her husband Ihsan of 57 years; her daughters Asli and Elif; her stepson Omer; her sister Necef; her sons-in-law Fred and Tal; daughter-in-law Zehra; and her cherished grandchildren Eren, Kaan, Kaya, and Ayla. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Neylan Bali was a brilliant student and a gifted pianist, trained at the Istanbul Conservatory of Music and the Uskudar American Academy. She attended Wellesley College on a scholarship and earned her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in 1965 with a dissertation on the UN Security Council. She began her 33- year career at the United Nations in 1966, rising to lead the UN office supporting the Security Council. Admired for her professionalism, integrity, and commitment to peace, she was described by Secretary-General Kofi Annan as the "institutional memory of the Security Council." Her passing has left a lasting hole in the hearts of her family and friends but her light shines on in her beloved children and grandchildren who hold her memory and her contagious laughter in their hearts.
