PETER BLANCHARD Obituary

BLANCHARD--Peter Parrott, III, completed his life's journey on August 7th in his Manhattan home with his wife, Sofia and son, Theo by his side. The son of Peter P. Blanchard, Jr. and Adelaide Frick Blanchard, Peter lived his life with integrity, kindness and purpose. His humor and irreverence were never far from the surface. His deep passion for nature and all its creatures led him to be a tireless advocate and supporter of land conservation from the coast of Maine to New Jersey to the Caribbean. He was an elegant writer, a prolific reader, a poetry lover and a landscape painter. He was most at home in the woods or at his beloved home in Maine, but when necessary he donned a tuxedo (or the "Iron Maiden" as he called it) to support the causes he championed. Born in 1951 in Manhattan, he received his undergraduate degree from Princeton, going on to earn Master degrees from the Yale School of Forestry and Teachers College, Columbia University. Early in his career, Peter taught biology at The Chapin School, The Masters School and Hardwood Island. He served for many years and until his passing on the Boards of The Frick Collection, the Helen Clay Frick Foundation and Greenwood Gardens, the New Jersey estate where he grew up, and which he and his wife worked tirelessly with others to transform into a magnificent public garden. He also served as a Council member of the Maine Coast Heritage Trust. Peter married late, and never expected the life he found with Sofia and the pride he felt for Theo. He will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. His beloved corgi, Ginnie, will miss him too. Peter believed in signs of nature as omens. We will be looking for him. Instead of flowers, please remember him by an act of kindness to others. Donations in his memory can be made to Greenwood Gardens or The Frick Collection. A memorial service will be held at a later time.

Mr. Blanchard was my professor at the Masters school. I loved his classes as he always made them fun.. With the corgi Poppet in the class at all times.. Who he lovingly referred to as the ' beast' .. I also volunteered with him and others on fixing up boats on the Hudson. He was an exceptional man. So kind and so easy to talk to. Im guessing he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He most definitely made a mark on my younger years. RIP Peter..

Sofia and Theo,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your beloved husband and father. Every time I walk the shore path along the sound at Mason's point in the winter I reflect on my gratitude that he gave me permission to do so all those years ago and I am so blessed to enjoy the beauty of that location. Those walks and reflections will have even deeper meaning now. Please know that you are in my thoughts as you navigate this difficult time.

Jack & I were so very sorry to hear about Peter. We met you both in North East Harbor a number of years ago, then at Christmas at the Burdens. Please accept our deepest sympathies. Daphne W Cheatham

Mr. Blanchard was my first science teacher at Chapin. I was a new student in 1981, and he was warm, humorous, and supportive. May he rest in peace.

I met Peter on one of my visits to Greenwood Gardens. He took such pride in the estate where he grew up, and he told great (and funny) stories as he guided us through the gardens. May his memory be for a blessing.

Peter will be sorely missedon the coast of Maine. His commitment to conseration and stewardship of the natural world was unmatched and his generosity, including with his own time, has left a lasting mark. Thank you, Peter for a life well-lived. My thoughts this morning are with Sophie, Theo and all who loved Peter.
