Peter Margonelli Obituary

IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR BELOVED BROTHER AND UNCLE

Peter Margonelli has passed away at the age of 67.

Peter grew up in Connecticut and spent his entire adult life in Tribeca, New York City. He was a brilliant, creative photographer and a man in love with the camera. As a young, enthusiastic graduate of NYU Film school he worked in Black and White photography and avant garde Super 8 film inspired by Dadaism while traveling throughout Japan and India.

Subsequent to his exploration of Asia he produced a series of photos of the Mughal Gardens of India which launched an illustrious career in garden and architectural photography. His work has been published in journals and books worldwide.

In his later years he traveled the globe making friends in every port, always with cameras in tow, focusing on his art.

Peter leaves behind a sister, two nieces, and grand nieces and nephew. He also leaves many cousins and relatives in Connecticut and South Carolina.

We will miss our brother, uncle and friend who inspired and delighted us with his robust, vivacious love of life.

I think of Peter often. Peter taught me how to edit film. I was introduced to him by Lisa Kraus. I took my film up to his loft in Tribeca and he sat me down at an editing table and left me to it. I would come and show him a version of the film and he would tell me to cut more.... and more and this went on and on until he was satisfied. Each time he explained why I should cut more and his patience and conviction that less is more stayed with me since that day. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. He left much beauty behind.

Although I only knew Peter as a 19 year old in a much less crowded Venice , I still hold the memory of our brief time together with such fondness. My heart goes out to you all at this time.

My name is Trish Walsh and I met Peter in Venice in 1975 with my close friend Margie. It was our first trip trip to Europe or anywhere outside Australia for that matter. We had such a wonderful time with Peter -he was funny , handsome and cheeky . We both fell in love with this beautiful young man. I saw him in 1976 when he came to australia after travelling through Asia and that was the last I saw of him. I was thinking about the past and he came so vividly to mind.I googled him and discovered that he had passed away. I offer my condolences to your family. I looked up his photography and what an amazing photographer he was.
I will always remember him and our nights in Venice

Peter. There will only be one of him and one like him to me. Peter only spoke the full truth of who he was and what he felt through the images he captured. I am truly blessed that my marriage to his cousin (the son of his beloved Aunt Sue, whom he adored) brought us into a shared sphere. I will miss you, Peter. You showed me a lot of truth, and brought me great joy.
