PHILIP CHENOK Obituary

CHENOK--Philip B., Died peacefully on February 12 at age 77, following a brief illness. Predeceased by his loving parents, Anna and Irving Chenok. Beloved husband of Linda Stack. Devoted father of David (Kati) and Daniel (Jill). Doting grandfather of Melissa, Elizabeth, Hannah, Ava, and Mira. Phil served as president and CEO of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) from 1980 to 1995. His book, "Foundations for the Future," details the increasing complexity of business transactions, reporting obligations, and role of technology during the period of his stewardship, and the response of the accounting profession to these changes; Phil also focused much attention on the need for transparency and high ethics across the profession. Prior to his service as AICPA President, Phil was a Partner with Main Hurdman, during which time he served as chairman of the AICPA's Auditing Standards Board, and was one of three delegates to the Accountants' International Study Group. He was proud to have recently attended the 100th anniversary of the AICPA as an honored guest. After his AICPA tenure concluded, Phil served as a visiting professor of accounting at New York University's Stern School of Business. In recent years, he retired with Linda to Tucson, AZ, where he served on finance-related committees, and enjoyed playing frequent golf. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 15 at 2pm at Fairchild and Sons Funeral Home, 1201 Franklin Avenue in Garden City, LI. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to the Tucson Museum of Art, where he served on the Financial Committee.

Phil was most influential in my career when he was AICPA president and even after he retired from that role. I will always be thankful for his involvement in my life.

I began working with Phil in 1974 when I joined the AICPA's staff, and continued to do so as a group vice president until he retired. Phil cared about his family, about the profession, and took an interest in me and my career, for which I am grateful.

It made me remember the collegiality that we enjoyed when he was president. It was simply a great place to work--I will always have good memories of Phil... May his memory be a blessing.

Distinguished career, devoted father, good guy, knew how to help make good sons-in law. Glad I knew him.
