Bob McGee
November 16, 2010
Bob was as mercurial as the city he loved, often working at D&L at 70 Pine Street to the wee hours of the morning, stepping out to an outdoor fire stair to admire 40 Wall or 20 Broad, marveling at the pulse of lights or the magnificent harbor in the middle of the night, taking the measure with special interest in all that was part of the public realm. He utilized the subways at any hour unless time was short, without any fear of the off-hours no matter his age or the neighborhoods; he was plugged in to humanity, celebrated the human resource before it was a catch phrase, marveled at the simple things that others would miss, gloried in architecture, loved the parks and the democratization that the vast public spaces represented for people, and supported artists and the arts for art's sake. He was an uncommon man often involved in the protection of the interests of the common one. He was willing to buck the power structure and bureaucracy, and he celebrated, in the spirit of the Greek polis, the responsibility endemic with what he regarded as society's holders of the highest rank: citizen.

Robert was a very great part of my life while I lived in Park Slope (Carroll St. from 1956-1976, and I was sorry to read of his death. He devoted his life to Prospect and Central Park, as well as being very active in putting Park Slope on the map.
While I haven't talked to him for many years, I'll still miss him.
