ROBERT SILVER Obituary

SILVER--Robert A., MD, died peacefully on Septem-ber 3rd, 2021 at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT with family by his side. He was 92. Born in New Haven in 1929, he grew up in West Haven with his parents; mother, Rose Albert Silver and pharmacist father, William H. Silver along with his older brother Edward and younger brother, David. Robert attended the Taranova School and graduated from Andover, Yale University (BS) and Tufts Medical School. He specialized in ophthalmology. His long career, which continued until he was 86, included his private practice on Park Ave. in New York City, and direct care, surgery and teaching at Lenox Hill hospital where he was a longtime staff member and mentor to medical residents in ophthalmology. He also enjoyed volunteering his time at the Lighthouse Guild, while simultaneously educating residents there. Bob embraced life and all it had to offer. He was a world traveler, skier, skilled equestrian, host par excellence, restorer of fine older homes and apartments in Europe and in NYC. He was an interior designer, collector, lover of dogs, fine food, art, music and culture. He was an avid reader and a theater aficionado too. Robert continued extensive travel until the age of 90. Tireless, intellectually curious and a lifelong learner, Bob always exceeded expectations in everything that piqued his curiosity. He was a loyal friend and a gentleman. He loved his friends and meeting new people who shared his passions. Robert was predeceased by his older brother Edward Silver. He is survived by his younger brother David and his wife (Meryl) along with several nephews, one niece, several great-nephews, two great- nieces and by friends near and afar. Per Robert's wishes, there will be no burial and no memorial service. I only knew Bob for about the last 15 years of his life. We attended many concerts and shows together and also enjoyed many dinners before and after. I always marveled at how busy Bob was in his 80´s! Traveling back and forth from Europe, taking wonderful vacations, and still enjoying so much of what New York has to offer culturally. When I think of Bob, I am inspired to soak up everything I possibly can that life has to offer. Because that´s exactly what he did. Bob carried an index card in his suit pocket and was constantly pulling it out to write down things he wanted to remember - a play we were talking about that he hadn´t seen but wanted to put on his list so he would remember to see it, a concert, exhibit, etc. Often he would text me a day or two later to ask what it was again because he couldn´t quite read his writing. And we would joke about him having a "doctor´s" handwriting!
When I lost my husband to a quick and aggressive brain tumor this past spring, Bob was so caring and kept checking throughout the following weeks to ask me to send pictures of my work in the garden (as he was also tired of being cooped up from COVID, I´m sure!). I wish I had told him how helpful it was to me to stay busy in the garden so that I could show him progress. It is part of what helped me in the beginning stages of a very rough time. That was Bob. Always enjoying life and learning, and always there for people. Thank you, Bob. I´ll miss you, my friend.

Dr. Silver was one of my teachers at Lenox Hill Hospital. He excelled at teaching, was an "old school" physician and true gentleman. In more recent years, I encountered him at Carnegie Hall, enjoying classical music. My sincere condolences.
