Memories may recede yet I still reach for the phone to call Stefan and discuss matters of importance. His opinion was always to be considered.

I took a course with Dr. Baumrin my freshman year at Lehman College. He took a great interest in my academic career and urged me to apply to Barnard College as a transfer student. I remember his erudition, kindness and the loving way he spoke of the other Dr. Baumrin. I went on to graduate Barnard and law school. His impact on my journey has been profound and my gratitude unending.

I worked for many years with Stefan as the Staff Assistant for the Structure Committee at the Graduate School. I was sadden to learn of his passing. His keen wit and sharp mind will be missed by many. My condolences to his family.

Stefan was a fervent advocate for, and a passionate devotee of, liberal education. And he instilled that ardor in his students.
I will miss our arguments.

It is difficult to imagine the New York City philosophy and bioethics communities without Stefan. His wit, critical rigor, and Socratic fervor were matched only by his patience with and concern for his students. We whom he nurtured early in our careers are incredibly fortunate. I will never forget him.

Stefan was simultaneously sharp as a knife and hilariously curmudgeonly in the best sort of way. He will be greatly missed. Love and condolences to his family.

Dear Stefan:
Before you were my teacher, you were my friend. I recall fondly our first meeting in a little Manhattan cafe with our common dear friend Peter. Thank you for years of mentoring, guidance through my graduate education, and being a friend. I wouldn't have achieved much of my academic success had it not been for you.

Mentor and friend of many years, Stefan was a tireless advocate of philosophy in CUNY and a founder of the Bioethics program at Mt. Sinai. I shall miss his kindness and wit.

Stefan was witty, erudite and scholarly. Pointed, too, in a way I really enjoyed. I only took one class with him at the Graduate Center, years ago, and I remember it quite fondly. I was wiser for it.

I truly admired and cared for Stefan, my teacher, advisor, and friend. I often found myself dumbstruck by his published worksbeautifully written, elegant arguments. This is a terrible loss for the many communities of which he was a member. We will profoundly miss him. May we each dedicate ourselves anew to the many projects he inspired.

Stefan was my brother-in-law, my mentor, a dear friend and sometime traveling companion -- wonderful times with Judith and Moira in Morocco, Europe, Mexico and elsewhere. Always,he spoke his mind always with facts always caring about outcomes. His passing leaves a massive gap in our family fabric. We will mend in his memory.

One of my favorite teachers, mentors, and friends, I think I argued more with Stefan in one course on Aristotle than with anyone else in my career as a philosopher.

Stefan was my friend, adviser, and teacher. As a mentor he took it upon himself to encourage his students to fully become themselves, not who he insisted they be. I will miss him very much. My condolences to his family and all who mourn their loss.

To a wonderful advocate for those of us unsure whether our disorganized philosophical impulses had an actual foundation to them. A remarkable teacher with infinite resources ready for our consumption, he was even more so a very supportive mentor and friend. Thank you for your benevolent irasciblility, Stefan. You will be missed.
