STEPHEN FRAZIER Obituary

FRAZIER--Stephen M. Stephen M. Frazier, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and community member, died in his home in Atlanta, Georgia on October 8, 2024, after a courageous battle against heart disease. Stephen was a natural storyteller with a keen wit and magnetic warmth. An award-winning broadcast journalist who reported from 55 countries, Stephen spent 12 years at NBC News as a network correspondent and anchor. He frequently anchored NBC Nightly News and NBC News at Sunrise and served as the substitute host for Today. While at NBC, he was assigned to five bureaus, including Tokyo, London, and Rome. He then moved to CNN in Atlanta, anchoring CNN/U.S., CNN NewsStand, CNN & Fortune, CNN Headline News, and CNN International. As senior correspondent for CNN Presents, he won an Emmy, a CableACE Award, and a National Headliner Award. Born in Boston, Massachusetts in June 1952 to Donald Frazier and Sarah Devlin Frazier, he spent his childhood years in Rhode Island and was drawn to all things nautical. A lifelong athlete, he also loved cycling, squash, and tennis. Stephen earned a bachelor's degree in English from Williams College. He was an omnivorous reader, music fan, and film lover and therefore an enthusiastic conversationalist and formidable trivia competitor. A thoughtful and committed friend and devoted husband and father, the most important part of Stephen's life was his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Cynthia; his children Matthew (Stacy), Elizabeth Anne Donnell (Cotter), and Andrew; and grandchildren William, Miles, Frances, and James. Stephen is also survived by his siblings, Donna and Richard, and seven nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 13, 2024 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at H.M. Patterson and Son Arlington Chapel in Sandy Springs. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to First Descents https://firstdescents.org/

Stephen and I worked together on The Today Show and a day never went by that we did not laugh together. He was funny. He was also one of the few people who always called me by my full name as if it were one name--always Ray Smith. "What did you think of that movie, Ray Smith?" he'd ask. I'm glad I remember his smile.

I was fortunate to work with Stephen at NBC as part of a camera crew. He was delightful to work with. I was so disappointed when he went to CNN!!!

In a world where 'class acts' are in short supply Stephen was certainly that. I worked with him at NBC News. There were a lot of oversized ego's there and he did not have one... He was funny, friendly, a true professional and existentially fair and decent. In the news racket, that's saying a lot. My condolences to his family and close friends.

I'm so sorry to hear of Stephen's passing. I worked with him at HeadlineNews and there were few people I liked working with more. He was a true professional on air and behind the scenes. He seemed to know a little bit about everything and if he didn't know, he loved to learn. He was so proud of his family. He spoke glowingly of you all. Peace to all who loved him.

Dear Cindy,

I am so terribly sorry to hear of Stephen’s passing. I have such fond memories of working with Stephen in London and knowing the two of you there, and then later in Atlanta. Stephen was a gem – the consummate journalist and gentleman, a glorious writer and a set of pipes that are unforgettable. And not to mention his glorious laugh. I can only imagine your sadness and hope that you and the family can be comforted by all your memories with this amazing man. You were the center of his world and quite a world it was.
Sending love, Karen Curry
