THOMAS FLEMING Obituary

FLEMING--Thomas J.,

Novelist and historian, died peacefully at his New York City home at the age of 90. Born July 5th, 1927 in Jersey City, New Jersey, he was a son of Thomas J. Fleming, who was commissioned in the field in World War I and served for three decades in Jersey City politics, and Katherine Dolan Fleming, a former school teacher. He graduated from St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City in 1945, served in the Navy on board the USS Topeka, and graduated from Fordham University with a B.A. with Honors in 1950. After brief stints as a journalist and magazine editor, he began a career as a writer in 1960 with his first book, Now We Are Enemies, an account of the Battle of Bunker Hill. For the next 57 years, he pursued his passion for writing both fiction and history. He wrote 23 novels, including the bestselling The Officers' Wives (1982) and 25 books on American history, including the widely acclaimed account of the Burr Hamilton conflict, Duel (1999). He also wrote books for young readers and collaborated with Margaret Truman on her book about her father, President Harry S. Truman. He was a frequent guest on C-Span, PBS, A&E, and the History Channel and wrote the companion volume for the PBS series, Liberty: The American Revolution. A complete catalogue of his work appears at: thomasflemingwriter.com. He also served as president of the Society of American Historians and PEN American Center. For 55 years he enjoyed summers at his beach house on Magna Lane in Westbrook, CT, where he self- published the Magna Magnet, a limited circulation newspaper that documented the foibles of his family and friends on Magna Lane, modeled after Ben Franklin's Craven St. Gazette. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Alice Mulcahey Fleming, four children, Alice Fleming (Gary Feder), Thomas (Susan), David (Sharon) and Richard, and seven grandchildren, Noah Feder, Kathryn Feder Cooper, and Helen, Lucie, Pauline, Madeleine and John Fleming as well as his nieces Kathryn Fleming Suse and Margaret Fleming Cushman. He was predeceased by his brother Eugene Fleming. The family will receive visitors at the Krtil Funeral Home, 1297 First Ave. (70th St.) on Tuesday, July 25th, 2017 from 5:00pm-9:00pm; a Funeral Mass will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 411 East 68th St., on Wednesday, July 26th at 10:00am. A memorial service will be held in the fall. Donations in his memory can be made to the Friends of Westbrook Public Library, 61 Goodspeed Drive, Westbrook, CT 06498.

Time passes, but my affection for Thomas Fleming and his craftsmanship does not fade. An inspiration to me as a teacher and a gifted writer.

Dear Fleming family,

When my daughter -- now a young woman -- was around the tender age of five, I came across "One Small Candle" at a used book store. After perusing the book, I was convinced that it was a much more accurate and honorable portrayal of the Separatists' history than I had been taught in public school.

For many years, starting in October (so that we could "hit" the colonists' feast during our American Thanksgiving celebration) I read the book to my daughter. It probably meant more to me than it did to her - especially since her father and I had decided to cease the celebration of Christmas because -- as the Separatists correctly assessed -- the holiday is nowhere in the Bible. (We are homeschooling, born-again Christians, so we thrive on this kind of thing ;) .)

Several years ago, I leant the book to my mother and it disappeared. Today, I purchased it anew online: a hardcover copy, signed by Mr. Fleming. I cannot wait to read again the difficult journey of a courageous group of faith-filled people who left everything they knew to take a chance on finding a life that fulfilled their beliefs, convictions and lifestyle.

I wish I could have thanked Thomas for his hard work and inspirational writing. As that is no longer possible, I am honored to have a venue to thank you, his (I'm sure) beloved family.

Kate
P.S. Thanks to Thomas, I now have a copy of the Geneva Bible -- the version read by the Separatists.

I'll never forget meeting one of my all time favorite writers and historians.

My most heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Fleming and the Fleming Family. Mr. Fleming is one of my all time favorite writers and historians. It was an unbelievable honor to eventually work with you in making The Great Divide an audiobook. On behalf of everyone whose life you touched, thank you!

I have just finished "The Great Divide" and was looking for an address to write that I thought this was absolutely the finest book or writing of any kind I'd ever read on the US Presidency & The US Congress!! and I wanted to tell him so.I just could NOT put this book down. However late I am overwhelmingly grateful for this work at look forward going back to all his related work. The 2015 Copyright Date indicates this may have been his last published work. It certainly looks like a capstone work on the conflict between Congress and the President, an as such it's just perfect. I was hoping to write I wished he'd go further, and am truly saddened to just find his obituary. We'd obviously never met but i am impacted by this notice, wish his family well, but do look forward going back through his works to see the development of the ideas and results beautifully assembled in "The Great Divide". Godspeed, Thomas Fleming!

To Alice, Tom and the Fleming family my sincerest condolences. Tom was a gentleman and scholar. He generously offered his professional support and he and Alice their friendship throughout my tenure as Executive Director of the Gomez Mill House Museum and Historic Site, the second owner of which was a Revolutionary leader of Orange County New York. I enjoyed our conversations about Revolutionary history, but we spoke of so much more over the years. He was simply extraordinary.

I have followed Tom'swork for many years with great enthusiAsm! What first attracted me to him. Was our common Jersey City roots. Although I have lived in NYC all my life. I have been both a student at St Peter's College/now University and also studied at Fordam University on the Graduate level. Also. When I read about Tom's loss and then spectacular regaining of his Father's ring, I dealt a common bond. The same situation happened to me! Talk about the coinsident! May God grant Tom a front row in the Press before his thrown!

Dear Alice -

I was truly saddened to learn from Donna Carpenter of New Age Books that Tom passed away on Sunday. I connected with Tom through Clifton Truman Daniel whom I represent and it was Tom who recommended that I submit to New Word City, with very happy results.

Tom also asked me to represent recent fiction works which I have not yet been able to sell, but will continue to try to do so.

It is my loss that I never met Tom in person, but rather through phone calls and emails. I'm honored to have known him, if only in that manner. His goodness as an individual shown through.

I am truly sorry for your loss and hope your years and years of good memories will sustain you in a difficult time.

Sincerely yours,

Bob Diforio

What a great loss to history lovers! To Fleming knew how to write and knew how to tell a story. My favorites are Liberty and Mysteries of My Father, only because I have so much more of his works yet to read. Not just a great writer, but more than willing to reply to the emails of a stranger a few years ago. After I read Mysteries, I reached out to Tom, and we corresponded several times. The connection was our Jersey City roots and of course, JC politics. A great voice has been lost. My sincere condolences to his entire family.

Dear Alice, and the Fleming family,
My heartfelt condolences to you in the loss of such a splendid man. Tom was a great friend, and spoke before the Rembrandt Club in Brooklyn, at the Museum of American Finance, for the Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society, the soul of the American Revolution Round Table, and dignified my book with a complimentary blurb on the cover. He was a lovely companion all the time and will be greatly missed.

To the Fleming Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.

One of the good guys! He'll be missed. Twice visited Stuyvesant High. It was wonderful to see Tom as an octogenarian connecting so easily and substantively with teenagers.
