1931 - 2024

ORR--Thomas Edward. Thomas Edward Orr passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on June 7, 2024. An intellectual and peaceful person, he brought a warm and welcoming presence to everyone he met. A loyal and loving friend, father, and husband, he will be sorely missed by all. Born on September 16, 1931, he grew up in north-east Philadelphia and became a New Yorker in 1967 when he moved here with his wife, Gail. He combated injustice in all forms and helped form CANDU (Chelsea Against Nuclear Destruction United), a neighborhood activist group, dedicated to fighting for nuclear disarmament locally and globally. Throughout his life, he wrote poetry, novels, and essays and drew constantly, creating epic graphic poems - a notable one featuring his granddaughter, Briana and his nephew, Tommy on a grand adventure through Central Park. His wonderfully drawn birthday cards will be remembered by all and he wrote and translated poetry to the end. He is survived by his daughter, Emily D. Orr, his son-in-law, Vincent Purdy, his granddaughter, Briana Purdy and his sister, Jane Edmonson. A commemoration of his life is planned for Saturday, September 21, 2024 at 12 noon at The 15th Street Quaker Meeting at Rutherford Place in New York City.
