TOM NEMET Obituary

NEMET--Tom, who died on July 4, 2010, lived the American Dream. He built a successful car dealership, he helped defeat proposed legislation that would have crippled the imported auto industry, and he enjoyed a full life with his immediate and extended family. To these three passions that animated his life, he brought grace and dignity. Founded nearly a century ago, Nemet Motors developed under Tom's leadership to become The Nemet Auto Group. Tom had a simple philosophy for selling cars: Treat your customers with respect, give them a good deal, and stand by them when in need. He served over 11,000 customers a year, but never let a day go by without thinking about how he could continue to grow the business. He knew that the Nation's Capital could have a profound impact, for good and for bad, in the life of a dealer. He lobbied Presidents, Senators, and Representatives, always sharing the same message: Because competition is the lifeblood of the nation, the best laws and regulations must be built on the foundation of free trade. In making the case for his industry, he never failed to remind politicians that his business was built around the porters, the mechanics, the sales personnel, and the others in the dealership whose livelihood depended on his ability to compete fairly. He founded Auto Dealers and Drivers for Free Trade as a means of providing financial support to Members of Congress who shared his vision. In the early years, before Honda, Nissan, and Toyota were household names, Tom worked with others in the industry to block proposed legislation and regulations that would have kept lower-priced cars and trucks beyond the reach of ordinary consumers. He fought hard as well to make sure that banks and other lenders would offer reasonable credit terms, so that a car or a truck would never be beyond the reach of someone who worked hard every day. But beyond his many accomplishments in building a business and helping the imported auto industry prosper, nothing mattered more in Tom's life than his family. He worked to bring family members into the business or to pursue their own dreams. He was passionate about his extended family as well. Conversations with colleagues never ended without him asking about their sons and daughters, and their jobs, their schoolwork, their aspirations. With his family by his side, Tom Nemet lost an 18-month battle with cancer on Sunday. He is survived by his loving wife Mary, sons Kyle, Todd, Ross and daughter Robyn and son in law Scott, and daughter in law Suzanne. Loving grandfather of Harrison, Jordan, Joshua, Matthew, and Rachel. Funeral to be held Wednesday, July 7th 2010 at 12pm at Schwartz Brothers-Jeffer Memorial Chapel 114-03 Queens Boulevard, Forest Hills, New York 11375 (718) 363-7600. Interim to follow at Beth David Cemetery - Elmont Cemetery 300 Elmont road, Elmont, New York 11003.

This comes many years after the last time I saw Tom. We attended & graduated from The Dwight School in New York City in 1953-54. We were great friends and Tom always seemed able to provide a car from his dad's lot when needed. After all this time I was saddened to read of Tom,s passing. He knew me as Rick Stein and I share my condolences with another classmate of Tom's; Tom Pulliam. We both live in Scottsdale, AZ. and just read of Tom,s passing today on the internet. To the Nemet family....my parents were best friends with Tommy's parents. I was so happy to have spoken to him a short time ago as I know how happy he was as well. I am so sorry for your loss. We, the children of Hungarian parents all believed we were related. My sincere condolences.

It’s been said that the character of a man can be judged by what he does for those he stands nothing to gain from. In this regard the encouragement, help and business advice Tom gave me won’t be forgotten. Jeff

Our sincerest condolences to Mary and Scott and the extended family he leaves behind. May his good will take him to higher places.

Tom, you were my mentor, my friend, my boss. There is not a day that will go by when you will not be missed. I wrote this poem for you but never had a chance to give it to you. I am like a fish out of water without you. May God hold you in the palm of his hand. Rest in peace my friend.

And Now I Know

You taught me how to live my life and listen to those around.
You taught me how to get right up when life would bring me down.
You gave to me strength inside when I was torn apart.
And now I know within myself you live within my heart.

You never let me take a road that was the easy path to take.
You explained to me what matters most is the decisions that we make.
You believed in me and kept me strong through each and every day.
And now I know you’re always there to help me find my way.

You always made me feel as though you listened when I would speak.
You never let me give excuses even if I was too weak.
You made me do what was best for me no matter what the case.
And now I know the gifts you gave me and those I shall embrace.

You helped me find my path in life by standing by my side.
You gave me so much knowledge and are my trusted guide.
You showed me that a friend is with you through both the good and bad.
And now I know you are the best friend that anyone has had.

The world is now without one of the greatest...tom nemet touched everyone he came in contact with...he will be rembered as a person who cared and struggled with every conflict he encountered by wanting to do what was RIGHT...if we all followed he line of thinking the world would be a better place...if we all play the game by being self serving we will never advance as far as he
did. I only hope that we haved learned from him and continue on
in our lives with his extremely valuable lessons

I had the pleasure of knowing Tom personally and professionally. I was fortunate to speak with him recently after a long time. He was truly devoted to his family and would do anything for them, even when they stumbled. I'm sure he will continue his efforts on his next journey and my condolences go out to his family as I was not able to join and share their grief in person.
