I was fortunate to be able to spend some time with Bill back when I was a journalist, profiling him for Institutional Investor magazine during his stints as CEO of Aetna and SEC Chair, as well as with DLJ co-founders Dan Lufkin and the late Dick Jenrette reflecting upon how modern equity research, which they created, had evolved. In the private sector he was an innovator and disruptor. As a public servant he wanted to get to the right answer more than win arguments or score political points. We sure could use more leaders like Bill these days. May he rest in peace. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

A inspirational, pioneering and superb leader...I was really privileged to work there under his time as President. Clearly most memorable period of my career. The last of the DLJ commandments was 'to have fun' and we sure did.

Bill was a pioneer, always thinking outside the boxes, always curious and imaginative-receptive to new ideas. His accomplishments and accolades are well known, but one has been omitted. In his service as Under Secretary of State he led the US efforts to deal with the OPEC generated petroleum crisis following the Yom Kippur War. He proposed the creation of the International Energy Agency as part of the OECD in Paris. The initiative was unanimously welcomed and the agency was organized in less than a month. It remains in operation today, coordinating the provision and allocation of petroleum products during dislocations and provides governments with data and policy options. Bill´s modesty and charm was unusual, but his profound legacy in the manyy and varied fields he explored was "Outstanding ". He would be pleased by this USMC salute to all hie accomplished.
