I had the good fortune to study American History with Bill Mcfeely at Mount Holyoke College in the 1970's. He was an inspiring professor, with a unique approach to American History and keen understanding of the impact of slavery and Reconstruction on subsequent racial relations in this country. His classes were memorable. One of his Civil War seminar classes, for example, consisted of a re-enactment of a battle, with student generals standing in socks on a seminar table which was covered by a home made topographic map. Many of us signed up for our first class with Professor Mcfeely to fulfill a graduation requirement and returned for subsequent classes because he was an awesome teacher. Sorry to hear that he passed away.
