ZIVIA WURTELE Obituary

WURTELE--Zivia Syrkin. April 1, 1921-January 20, 2019. Born in New York City on April 1, but nobody's fool. She was unapologetically herself, with a quick wit and the kindest heart. She was generous, intensely caring, incredibly funny, a Zionist, and a talented artist. A keen intellect with a Ph.D. in mathematical statistics (Columbia U., 1954), she lectured in mathematics, advised on nuclear policy and economics, loved poetry, kept abreast of all impactful events, and, for their safety, carefully tracked the exact global itineraries of all her family. Preceded in death by parents, Nachman Syrkin and Masha Osnos Syrkin, sister, Marie Syrkin, and cousin, David Bodansky. With her late husband, Morton Gaither Wurtele, she begat Eve and Jonathan Syrkin Wurtele, who, respectively, begat Dimitri (Sofia), Mashette (Will), and Judy Syrkin-Nikolau, with Basil Nikolau, and Abby and David Wurtele, with Lisa Karp Wurtele. Loved so deeply by them and many more.
