Dr. Curry was born March 6, 1937 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to the late Edgar Benjamin Curry and Esther Shirley Curry of Tuscaloosa and he passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika following an extended illness.

Dr Curry received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. and his medical degree from The University of Alabama, Birmingham. Dr. Curry was among the early specialists at Lee County Hospital (now East Alabama Medical Center) and had the distinction of being the first pediatrician to practice in Lee County, Alabama. He was the founder of The Pediatric Clinic. He joined the hospital staff in 1968 and served at the medical center until his retirement in 1999. He served as the Chief of Staff in 1971-1972.

His civic responsibilities include serving on the board of directors of three local organizations – The City of Opelika Board of Education, Lee County Habitat for Humanity and The Achievement Center/Easter Seal of East Alabama.

Many children and their children were cared for by Dr. Curry and quite often one of his former patients would come up to him and say, "Dr. Curry, I know you don't remember me but you were my doctor when I was a baby." Many times he would reply, "Yes I do remember you" and call their name. He practiced medicine and cared for hundreds of East Alabama children for over 30 years.

Dr. Curry is survived by his wife of over 43 years, Barbara Z. Curry of Opelika and their four children: Chris Curry of Opelika, Jason (Paige) Curry of Opelika, Anna (Todd) Dillard of Liberty City and John (Jenice) Curry of Auburn; his two sisters Becky (Jimmy) Duke of Birmingham and Shirley (Ed) Arnold of Centre, Alabama and one brother, Bob Curry of Centre. In addition he is survived by six grandchildren: Gracen, Ethan, and Lucy Curry of Auburn, Peyton Curry of Opelika and Brandon and Byron Dillard of Liberty City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the East Alabama Medical Center Foundation, 2000 Pepperell Parkway, Opelika, AL 36801.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family. Dr. Curry was our (my sister and I) pediatrican. I remember having terrible ear infections and he even came to my parent's house at 3 a.m. one night just to calm me, a screaming child in pain. He lived right down the street, and I loved knowing that he was my doctor. He will definitely be missed!

Our hearts are broken, but don't you know the angels are rejoycing in heaven! He has always been much more than a Pediatrician, he was a young mother's best friend! After our children were grown, he always kept up with them and their accomplishments! So much wisdom and even more love and caring was his practice and taking care of his patients! My husband and I love him dearly as do my children, even at 28 and 25 years of age. I am so glad he is and always will continue to be part of our lives! Way to go Dr. Curry, you have been promoted to God's promise land!

Dr. Curry became my elder daughter's pediatrician back when he first came to Opelika, when the idea of having a pediatrician was fairly new in the area, and most children were in the care of General Practitioners. He also became my younger daughter's pediatrician as soon as she was born. So many years ago, but I remember well his kindness and wisdom, and the feeling that my children were safe in his hands. He was a blessing.
