Bobbie Parker Obituary

Bobbie R. Parker, 86, of Washington, died Monday, August 5, 2024, in her home, surrounded by her family. Bobbie was born August 13, 1937, in a farmhouse in Etowah, Tenn., in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, weighing just 2 pounds, 8 ounces. She delighted in telling the story of how her grandmother wrapped her in a blanket, put her in a shoebox, and surrounded her with bricks warmed in the wood stove. Despite being small at birth, Bobbie never experienced a serious illness until a few weeks before her passing. A daughter of the late Baxter and Helen Rayburn, the family moved from Tennessee to Cincinnati, Ohio for her father to have work with the railroad. Bobbie graduated from Hughes High School in Cincinnati and started working in the retail world with local department store McAlpin's. When McAlpin's opened a new suburban store in Cincinnati, Bobbie took a job there as a buyer for the jewelry department and met Karl "Dwane" Parker, whom she married July 26, 1958. When Dwane needed to move to pursue a career in harness racing, the couple packed up their three children and relocated to Washington so Dwane could race horses at The Meadows racetrack. Bobbie began working in the offices of Sears at Franklin Mall in Washington. In later years, she also worked in the insurance business, notably with the Hitchcock Agency. Bobbie was a bright light in the lives of her family and made friends everywhere she went, from the grocery to the pharmacy to the post office. She was always available to be supportive or simply share a meal or a story. She was a very involved grandmother to Kyle and Ryan and recently was babysitting her great- granddaughter, Ellie Jane. She avidly followed all Pittsburgh sports but especially harness racing at The Meadows, where her family competed, and where she had many friends. Her husband, Dwane, predeceased her, passing in 2022. She is survived by her three children, Kathy (Dan Coon), Norm (Paulette), and Sally (Rod) Bolon; grandsons, Kyle (Sarah) Bolon, Ryan (Olivia) Parker, and Rodney Bolon; and great- granddaughters, Ellie Jane Bolon and Hadley Bolon; one brother, Frank Rayburn; two sisters-in-law, Karen Warsaw and Janet Rayburn; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also predeceased by her brother, Jerry Rayburn. The family would like to thank Concordia Hospice of Washington for assisting with Bobbie's care. Friends will be received from 4 to 6 p.m., the hour of services, Thursday, August 8, in the Hummell and Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. All other services are private. Memorial donations may be made to Concordia Hospice of Washington, 10 Leet Street, Washington, PA 15301; the American Cancer Society, online or via mail at P.O. I had the pleasure of meeting Bobbie in 1974 when we worked together at Sears. We later reconnected at 30 and Out Fitness several years ago. She spoke so lovingly about her husband, children and grandchildren. Carry her light in your heart and speak of her often. She made a difference in the world.
