Nicholas Manganas Obituary

Nicholas "Nick" Manganas, 85, of Canonsburg, passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2015, in his home, surrounded by his family.
He was the loving husband of the late Eugenia Manganas, and loved, admired and idolized father of six children, John (Rita), Chris (John) Liokareas, Andrew (Amy Lieb), Irene Lang (James Lieb), Angela (Pantelli) Athanas and the late Tom (Toni) Manganas.
Also surviving are 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces, children of his late sister, Angela (Theodore) Papaloizos and late brother Thomas (Eugenia) Manganas; and brothers-in-law Nicholas Kalafatis and Robert Kalafatis.
Mr. Manganas was born December 27, 1929, in Oinoussai, Greece, a son of the late John and Chrysanthi Manganas.
With his mother, sister, and brother at age 12, he spent three years as a refugee of World War II in Cyprus, before immigrating to America in 1947, where he first met his father at age 17.
In 1952, he married Eugenia Kalafatis, his wife of 60 years.
He was the founder of Manganas Painting Company Inc., a legendary entrepreneur in the business.
His work projects extended throughout the United States, and he was respected as an iconic figure among the professional community. He was well known throughout Pittsburgh for painting many of the bridges and industrial power plants.
Mr. Manganas was a brilliant poker and pinochle player. He loved the Pittsburgh sports teams and looked forward to having his family gather around him for every game.
For 30 years, he enjoyed much of his time in a second home at New Port Richey, Fla., and his happiest days were when he and his wife, who his grandchildren called "Papou and Grams", had it filled with the excitement of their family vacationing with them.
His presence, love and stature as a role model will be missed dearly by his family, friends and all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Beinhauer Funeral Home, 2828 Washington Road, McMurray, PA 15317. Additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Friday, December 11, in Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, Pittsburgh. Interment will follow.

When I saw Uncle Nick Manganas' obituary on-line last night, I was saddened to learn of his death. I had no idea that he had passed away.

Even though he lived in Pittsburgh and my family lived in Cleveland, Ohio while I was growing up, I have very fond memories of him visiting my parent's house on occasion when my Uncle George was there. Many years ago, I happened to run into him and his family in Atlantic City, NJ. We had such a lovely chat in the brief time that we spent together.

My sincere condolences to his entire family.

My condolences to Nick's family. While I only knew him a short time, so many years ago, the memory of his kindness has stayed with me. I had the utmost respect for the gentleman that he was.

A great man, who held his head up with pride, he had so many things to be proud of.... His family, his work, and anything that he conquered throughout his life. I have many memories of him, but mostly from my teen years..... Washing his car was something I did many times. I loved him and Aunt Jean like parents. They are together now, and finally Tommy has both his parents with him. His memory and his legacy with live on through all of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Dear Uncle Nick,

I grew up idolizing you, Uncle Nick, you were bigger than life itself. I worked hard so you could notice my efforts - you inspired me. You were not only the "King of the Bridges", you were a great family man which I tried to emulate. From afar, you were and always will be my hero.

May God rest your blesed soul ... and please say hello to my father in law, Tom.

Your loving nephew,
John Michael Pateras
