What motivates people like Sen. Coburn to excel in life? Maybe it was the school track meet back in 6th grade at Longfellow Elementary School. Tommy was in the final and expected to win. On that day, however, Dottie Hays outran us all and took the blue ribbon for 1st Place. Tommy grinned and allowed as how maybe he had underestimated the competition. Never again!

Senator Coburn was one of two senators who came to Missouri to assist in my campaign for the US Senate in 2012. He was the ultimate gentleman and unrelenting warrior for freedom. He will forever be remembered as he inspired me as he did thousands of others.

Tommy and were classmates at Longfellow, West High and Central High School in Muskogee. He and Carolyn were always very kind to me. I remember him as the All-American boy that everyone liked and look up to because he was really a model of what I would now call the Christian gentleman. The last time I saw him was after he had been elected to the House of Representatives but he took time to make a house call on a patient, my step-father Ed Rawlins, who was terminally ill. Our family joins so many others who are grateful for his care as a physician who cared for his patients, particularly the moms and dads of the many babies he delivered. Many now offer tributes to Senator Coburn for his public service but in Muskogee we remember him as a friend and doctor who will always inspire us by his example.
