Ocala - Nan Evelyne Rogers Andrews, 94, of Ocala passed away on Friday, December 9, 2016 at Ocala Regional Medical Center in Ocala, FL.
Nan Evelyne Rogers Andrews was a native of Alexandria Bay, New York and moved to this area from Antigua, West Indies in 1958. She attended Alexandria Bay High School where she graduated as valedictorian in 1939. Because she was only 17, she had to wait a year before going to New York City to attend Columbia University-Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, from which she graduated as a RN in 1943. She proudly wore the Presbyterian Hospital pin on her uniform every day of her 43 year nursing career. She joined the Navy Nurse Corps in 1944 where she earned the rank of LT (jg). She served her country during World War II resigning her commission in 1947 due to marriage, which was required of women back then. She generally worked as the nurse supervisor in the operating room until she began her public health career upon moving to Marion County.
Because she had to make home health visits and school visits, she got her first driver's license at the age of 36. In the 1970's, she graduated from the first Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner class in Florida and worked as a nurse practitioner in the county health department supervising the family planning clinic until her retirement in 1986. In 1965, she became a charter member of Ft. King Presbyterian Church, and later served as an Elder. Mrs. Andrews was a life member of the Military Officers Association of America, and a charter member of the Kingdom of the Sun Chapter for 40 years; she also served as a past president of the chapter. She was a member of the Navy Nurse Corps Association and Women in Military Service for America. One of the highlights she enjoyed in recent years was in 2012 when she went on the Honor Flight with other WWII veterans to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. She was a member of the Woman's Club of Ocala for 50 years and the Daughters of the American Revolution for 25 years.
Survivors include her children, Linda A. Buby of Gainesville, FL, and Bruce Andrews of Ocala; nieces and nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Devillo and Heloise Rogers; her sister, Edwina Crow McKinzie and her brother, Devillo J. Rogers.
A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Wednesday January 4, 2017 at Fort King Presbyterian Church, 13 NE 36th Avenue, Ocala. She will rest in peace at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell.
