Dear Mr. and Mrs. Stanley,

One of the best memories of Derek I have is Anna's Birthday party when they were about 6. I remember there was many little children gathered around the kitchen table with big chef hats on helping bake Anna's cake. And there was Derek, the only boy at the party standing next to Anna with a huge grin on his face. He is what made Anna's day so special, they were the best of friends. Please know that our family is thinking of you. God sometimes puts more on our plate than we think we can handle, but you are stronger than you know. If you need anything please give us a call, we are all here for you.

A Mother

September 11, 2004

To The Stanley Family.

When I read the obituary of your son - as a mother, my heart broke. I experienced the loss of a brother who was 22 years of age in a tragic car accident, I was a senior in High School. That was nearly 26 years ago and not a day goes by that I do not think of Michael. I remember his funeral mass vividly. Even as a 17 year old I knew that he was in a better place. I knew that God would continue to use him in Heaven - as St Therese said" To do good on Earth" Yet the pain was at sometimes unbearable. It was my strong catholic faith that God used to sustain me and my family through this time. The cards, flowers, food, love and support of family and friends. Also the knowledge that, by the grace of our Baptism, we will one day be together again in the presence of our Lord. Know that your are in the prayers of many many people. We have cried for you, prayed for you and asked Derek to watch over you as he savors the unfathomable love, peace, joy and mercey of our Risen Lord.

...Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Amy and Gary, I realize there are no words that could possibly ease your pain right now. I trust you will allow yourselves to lean on family and friends who I know are there for you and want to help you through this difficult time. I believe the healing process begins through the sharing of wonderful memories of Derek. I hadn't seen him for several years, however, my memory is of a very energetic and polite young man that any parent would be proud of. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Gary and Amy - no words can express our sympathy for your great loss. Nothing exceeds the pain a parent experiences with the tragedy of the passing of their beloved child. We wish to extend our greatest feelings for you and yours in this time of need. God bless Bonnie Durling and Brent Wray

I couldn't believe it when my mother informed me of Derek. It truly made me sit back and take into consideration the choices I make and how they will effect my life and the people around me. This also reminded me to never take advantage of life. I'm only 20 and there is so much more I need to do before I leave. Derek was one of the good guys.

Dear Gary, Amy, Theresa.

I cannot imagine your pain at losing Derek, but I can feel it from here. I offer words by Buffy Ste. Marie for comfort:

Where are you going, my little one, little one?

Where are you going, my baby, my own?

Turn around and you're two,

Turn around and you're four.

Turn around and you're a young man

Going out the door.

Turn around, turn around, turn around and you're a young man,

Going out the door.

To the family and friends of Derek.

First to the family, I am so sorry about your loss. Nothing anyone can say will be able to make you feel better. I hope and pray that each day that goes by it will get a little easier. The road you are about to travel is not an easy road, but look to God and He will guide you.

To Derek's Friends. If you need a shoulder to cry on you can call me. I know what it's like to lose a friend. My best friends was killed in a car accident two years ago. I will be here to support each and everyone of you if you need me. Don't hesitate to contact me. Life is to short.

I didn't know Derek as well now as I did when we were in elementary school. I can remember a lot of good times.

God Bless each and everyone of you. He is watching you in your time of sadness.
