Herbert Hanlon Obituary

Dr. Herbert J. Hanlon

Dr. Herbert J. Hanlon, 82, passed away April 24, 2015 after a short illness.

Dr. Hanlon was born and raised in the Cleveland area. He graduated from John Carroll University, where he met the love of his life, Josephine, on a blind date. They were married June 14, 1958. Both Josephine and Herbert attended St. Louis University where he received his Medical Degree. They moved to Akron for his internship and residency at Akron General and created a wonderful life together with their five children. Dr. Hanlon was one of four physicians who founded the Emergency Department and ER residency program at Akron General Medical Center. He spent 25 years in emergency medicine at numerous facilities in the area. Dr. Hanlon also spent almost 50 years as a family practice physician. He did not believe in retirement and still continued to make house calls for a small number of patients. He always said he would retire when he no longer enjoyed what he was doing -- and he never reached that point. Dr. Hanlon believed in life-long education and graduated from the University of Akron Law School and passed the bar in 1985. Through the years Dr. Hanlon was active in the Akron community as coach and past president of West Akron Baseball League (WABL), president of Greater Akron Baseball Federation (GABF), team physician for the St. Vincent-St. Mary High School's athletic program from 1973-1989, board member of Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), St. Hilary JOY program, and board member for Freedom Brass Band. Over the past 30 years he assisted off and on with the Akron Beacon Journal paper route that his youngest son got when he was 16 and his wife, Jo, insisted on continuing because she enjoyed the morning quiet time with different family members so much.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine. He is survived by children: James (Alicia), Michael, Mary Jo Heckman, Kathleen, and John (Trayce); grandchildren, A.J., Alaina, Sydney, Samantha, Michael, Johnny (Alexis), Dakota and Austin Hanlon, Jackie White (Jamie), Ashley, Daniel, Tyler and Alex Heckman, Jessica Kozlowski Morris (Christopher); and great-grandchildren: Kalyn, Tessie, Braxton, Aiden, Michael, Mallorie and Kaleb.

Calling hours 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 Thursday at Ciriello and Carr Funeral Home, 39 S. Miller Rd. in Fairlawn. Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Friday at St. Hilary Catholic Church, followed by interment at St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Norwalk, Ohio.

To the Hanlon family. I would visit with Dr. Hanlon every month when he came to pay his storage bill. He had such a great sense of humor and was so smart about so many things that I looked forward to his visits. I will miss him along with so many others. I know he is now with Josephine and is happy. God Bless.

I had the privilege to work with Dr Hanlon in the Barberton ER. He was patient, kind, and always fun. I learned many of my assessment skills from him. He was always so good with his patients. My deepest sympathy to his family

My dearest Hanlon cousins... I am very sorry to be missing Uncle Mudge's funeral and being with all of you during this time. I am so sorry for your loss, especially on the heels of losing Aunt Jo earlier. They were both such wonderful people and are now joyously reunited. You can rest assured they will be watching over each of you and your families. What better guardian angels! I personally thank God for having them as a part of my life.
With love...their Flower Girl

I was a coach with Herb, in WABL. He also was my family physician. We opposed each other on the baseball field, as we coached different teams. But he was a friend. I moved from Akron, in 1994, on a job transfer.
He was a good man and a friend. God Bless!

Dr. Hanlon was my doctor for over 20 years before I moved out of state. He was the best doctor ever. Very compassionate, had a great sense of humor, and always made you smile no matter how bad you felt, but also was very serious when needed to be. Took the time with you and you never felt rushed in his office. One, aspect I always admired was if you called the office after hours, it went to his home and he answered the phone himself and answered your questions. Truly a wonderful doctor and family man. They don't make doctors like him any more. He will surely be missed by all who knew him. Thoughts and prayers with his children. You should be very proud to call him your father.
