Nick Simich Obituary

"Then and Now"

Nick Simich January 27, 1925

January 8, 2009

One of Ohio's great fishermen was surrounded by loving family as he set out on his final fishing trip Thursday, January 8, 2009 after a battle with diabetes complications.

Nick was a lifelong Ohio resident and served in the US Navy during World War II. He returned to Ohio working in the fishing industry before retiring from BF Goodrich. He enjoyed fishing, family, friends, sports, reading, traveling-especially to Canada. He had a love of fishing like no other, winning many trophies and awards throughout his lifetime. When the weather clears load your boat, cast a line, reel one in and let it go for Nick before calling it a day.

Nick was preceded in death by his parents, Vic and Katarina; and his brother, Milton. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Evelyn; children, Nick, Janice, Pam, Judy and Shirley; brothers, John, Ted, Tom and Paul; sister, JoAnne; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many great friends.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, January 12, 2009 at ADAMS MASON FUNERAL HOME, (791 East Market Street), where funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, January 13, 2009. Rev. Paul Markland officiating. Interment will be private. ADAMS MASON, (330) 535-9186.

I am sorry to hear of Nick's passing. He and my father Toby Shopper worked for many years at Fred Arbogast in Akron. I knew Nick and his father Vic and most of Nick's brothers and son. Nick probably forgot more about fishing than most of the current so called TV experts know. It was said that Nick could "talk" to a bass. I believe that has merit. He will be missed.

Very sad day to the "old timers" in the tackle business. I was a young boy when I first met Nick who was working for Pflueger back in the 60's. We used to use his camper out at Hill-N-Dale each year. I still have many of the publicity photo's taken of Nick while working at Pflueger and would be happy to show these to family members down the road. I'm currently in the tackle trade and still bring up Nick Simich as one of the best natural casters I've ever seen. Email me and we'll try to get together when you're ready. Again, my thoughts and prayers to all of your family.

I worked with Nick and his buddy Howie at BFG. At outings Nick would cast a plug around a cigar at 30-40 feet away. I was the dummy with the cigar in his mouth. God Bless!

While growing up on Honodle Street, we lived across the street from the Simich FAMILY. Watching them practice in the drive way and vacant lot next door. They were all a great family. We moved away to goodyear Heights. Then I got married and we moved to Florida and still live here. Our thoughts and prayer to the family
