Not sure what to say?

I only learned today of Dr. Hoyt's passing. He was a skilled doctor and a comforting presence. Dr. Hoyt performed four operations on me, including one of the earliest fusions of its kind in the country to address my scoliosis which allowed me to walk. It's still holding 42 years later, which should not be surprising given his ability. I wil always remember, too, his quiet kindness and consistent reassurance to me and my parents. He also inspired by brother to become a doctor. He will be missed but the memories by many and good deeds toward many live on. Love to his family.

Dr. Hoyt did my spinal fusions when I was 12 years old. He was such a wonderful man that he made a bad experience for a young child not so bad. He was great, always cheerful and always had a twinkle in his eye. I remember him very clearly. I went back to see him when I was in my 30's and he actually asked about my mom and dad! What a caring and wonderful man! He will be greatly missed.

"Judge each day not by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant"I had the honor of being one of Doctor Hoyt's residents, and his partner in practice for many years. He planted many seeds, and will be missed. My deepest sympathy to Sue and his family, but his life was a legacy, and should be celebrated as well. God bless all of you...

Dear Sue & Family, Greetings from the distant past and condolences. We lost track of each other when mom & dad sold the ranch and subsequently passed away. I'm sorry for that.

I'm aware that Dr. Walt was a leader in his field, but it was as a lifetime friend that he and Sue are known. His ready smile and good humor, mixed with his willingness to listen to me as a child and a young adult are the qualities that really distinguish him. Also prominent was his modesty. A man whom my father told me attended General George Patton after his end of the war injury and when he was dying, he never mentioned it to me. His strength of character shows in his eyes in my memories. He achieved a higher level of wisdom than most of us, and at an earlier age. Sue, when things settle down, please contact me, as I would like to talk. There were times when our families had more laughs and fun than it seemed that the law would allow. I know that the loss of a giant like Walt can be difficult, but it is also a life to celebrate, and for Walt, the beginning of a new life.

In today’s world when extensive subspecialization is the norm I consider myself fortunate to have trained with a surgeon who was capable of performing all the orthopaedic procedures, which were the standards of care during the prime of his career. I scrubbed with Dr. Walter A. Hoyt Jr. on such diverse procedures as correction of syndactyly in the hand as well as correction of severe pes cavus deformity in the foot. Correction of idiopathic scoliosis via Harrington rod instrumentation was also performed with extreme skill. He made everything look easy. Dr. Hoyt was one of the pioneers of total hip arthroplasty. I employed his techniques throughout my career. Despite his excellent surgical technique I learned more from him and about him by watching him examine a patient. He never appeared to be in a hurry but each part of the physical examination flowed from one to the other in a very comprehensive and fluid fashion (similar to his operative technique). Dr. Hoyt’s professionalism was evident in dealing with all patients regardless of station or rank. His bedside manner would calm even the most difficult or belligerent patient. Dr. Hoyt recognized that subspecialization was the wave of the future and encouraged his young graduates to obtain fellowships in order to serve the citizens of Akron with “state of the art” care as well as teach future residents the fundamentals of their subspecialty areas. Dr. Hoyt was instrumental in establishing the musculoskeletal curriculum at NEOUCOM as well as establishing the Robertson-Hoyt Musculoskeletal Research Laboratory of Summa Health System. We will miss this charismatic physician, surgeon, leader, mentor and role model. On behalf of the Akron Orthopaedic Community and on behalf of all the orthopaedic residents Dr. Hoyt trained, I extend my deepest sympathy to the Hoyt family.

To the family of Dr. Hoyt:

Dr. Hoyt and Dr. Krill were my mother's (Lucille Stafford, deceased) absolute favorite doctors, as she was a registered nurse and worked with both of them. I remember all the times Dr. Hoyt fixed my broken ankles and arms. He was the best at the two things a great physician must have: competence and compassion. He was a truly wonderful human being and he will be greatly missed by all of us, but take comfort that he is now at eternal peace. God Bless.

In 1963 I injured my shoulder playing football at Barberton HS. The physicians examining me were unable to diagnose the specific injury or extent of the damage. I was sent to Dr. Hoyt who quickly determined my injury and path for healing. I will always remember his professionalism and kindness.
