Del and I were so sorry to hear of the loss of Bev. Although we only knew her for a short time, we always looked forward to seeing her to hear about the latest trip or the upcoming plans for the next adventure. She was a warm and gracious woman who will be missed by many.

My sympathies on the death of your mother. My youngest sister Paige brought it to my attention. Just know that friends from times past are thinking of you with love.

I’m very sorry for your loss.

My mother taught at Heritage Hall with Mrs. Kowalski. Mom and Dad were friends with Dr. and Mrs. Kowalski. However, I will always best remember Mrs. Kowalski fondly as my school counselor at Heritage Hall.

I still remember her smile and her laughter. She didn’t stay cooped up in her office. Instead, one could find her in the halls between classes as she said “Hi,” to this student and asked, “How are you doing?” of another --- and we knew she was sincere when she asked. She made herself approachable, whether one needed her sound advice on a class schedule or just “someone to listen.”

Mrs. Kowalski didn’t reproach, blame or guilt her students. Hers was never to humiliate a student in any difficult situation. She seemed to know that teenagers were a “work in progress.” Whether the issue was a low grade or playing hooky on a spring day, Mrs. Kowalski helped students learn to accept responsibility for their actions and choices, and encouraged them to do better --- for their own sakes --- rather than out of fear of punishment.

She handled serious matters with calm, fairness and good judgment. She cheered for our successes and shared in our disappointments. She encouraged everyone around her. And although she didn't work out of a classroom at Heritage Hall, she was a teacher who taught us valuable lessons in character through her example.

Mrs. Kowalski helped shape the lives of many young people who attended Heritage Hall. Her example and legacy live on in each one of us because we are better people for having known her.

Mrs. Kowalski was one of my teachers when she was teaching at Washburn Rural High School in the mid to late 70's. I always appreciated her style and her mannerisms when it came to English and Literature. She truly was a professional and it showed. May God Bless her family in their time of loss. Mrs. Kowalski is in a better place.
