Sincerest sympathies to Mr. Baker's family. So very sorry to hear of his passing. He was my band director at Southeast in the mid 80s. Learned so much from him and always admired his passion for music.
May the Lord's peace and comfort be with you.

There was one thing that I admired about Mr. James Roy Baker, and that he commanded respect, which was in demand when he took the band director post at U.S. Grant High School back in the autumn semester of 1976. He admired those students who were seriously into music, and he highly held in esteem those who were great examples of his students. One of his strong characteristics was that he wanted his students to grasp a solid knowledge of the classics of music as well as jazz, which the latter happened to be his passion.

Jim was an inspiration to all of us at SHCOG. His perseverance during the valleys of life demonstrated his immense faith in and love for his Lord. I know that Jim was so grateful to be in God's house, whether he was worshipping in the choir or playing his trombone, or as he did later in life, sitting in the congregation. He was always there, completely present in the moment, ready to listen and learn. While we will miss him on earth, he's got the very best seat in the house, standing, waving his hands and joyously singing praises once again. God Bless you Wanda, you were Jim's Angel for 62 years... now, Jim is yours. Love you and miss you.
