John Kendig

OLEAN - John Kendig, 76, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday (July 19, 2023) at Olean General Hospital.

Born Oct. 14, 1946, in Lancaster, Pa., he was the son of Amer and Emma Rohm Kendig.

John served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam war. During the latter part of his tour of duty he received injuries during combat and was awarded a purple heart.

He had been employed at the Intelligencer Printing Company in Lancaster as a supervisor in the shipping department. After John retired and moved to Olean, he began his job at the Bartlett Country Club as a groundskeeper and loved it for all of the following 19 years.

Also, upon moving to Olean he met Barbara Shoemaker Klampt, and they dated for many years before marrying on June 16, 2012.

John was a member of the Olean American Legion, St. Stephens Club and Olean Rod and Gun Club.

In his free time, he enjoyed being outdoors, with hunting being his favorite pastime. He also loved the game of golf, played softball until he was in his 50s, cycled and fished. John looked forward to his month-long trip to Florida every year.

He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him, especially Kirk. He will also be sorely missed by canine companions, Lola, Juno and Dakota.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Dawn Kendig Aldinger of Lebanon, Pa., Christopher Kendig of Pequea, Pa. and Brian Kendig of Millersville, Pa.; his step-children, Christopher Klampt of Cuba, Gregory Klampt of Ocean Springs, Miss. and Robert Scicchitano of Olean; a twin sister, Sherri Kendig Fleming of Millersville, Pa.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Rick Kendig of Manheim, Pa. in 2015.

Friends will be received for a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday (June 26, 2023) at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Road, Olean.
