Joseph Guss Obituary

GUSS-Joseph S., died on July 31, after a brief illness, just a few months shy of his 90th birthday on September 17. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and served in the Pacific. Prior to his military service, he graduated from Central High in 1936. Although he did not have a college degree, he moved with ease in the world due to his innate intelligence and understanding of people. He often reminded his children, whom he proudly sent to fine universities, that they don't teach common sense in college. He owned Micklin Home Improvement on Cuming Street and worked there for over 50 years until he sold it in 1988. Active in community affairs, Joe was president of Mount Sinai Cemetery at 78th and Crown Point Avenue for 33 years. In addition, he served as president of the PTA and participated in various Jewish charitable organizations. The patriarch of the family, he is survived by his wife of almost 68 years marriage- Pauline Rosenbaum Guss; his son Dr. Stephen Guss and wife, Toni, of Morristown, NJ; his son, Dr. Robert Guss and wife Bonnie, of Desert Creek, CA; his daughter Barbara Guss Kemp, Esq. and husband Giles, of Scarsdale, NY; his grandchildren, Julie Guss Schneider and husband Matt of Morristown, NJ; Jennifer Guss Siegel and husband Michel, of Houston, TX, Rebecca L. and David Guss Kemp of Scarsdale, NY, and Carly, Zachary and Jason Guss of Desert Creek, CA; as well as four great grandchildren, Jacob and Sabrina Schneider and Sofia and Joshua Siegel. This week, according to Joe Guss's standards, one of the richest men in the world just died. Joe, over a lifetime accumulated a treasury of precious jewels - his wife, family and friends, who admired and loved him for his wit, warmth and wisdom.
FUNERAL Friday, August 1 at 10:30 am, Mount Sinai Cemetery, 78th and Crown Point Avenue. Memorials can be sent to Mount Sinai Cemetery.

Barbara,
I was saddened to read of your father's recent passing. Although knowing him for just a brief time, it was apparent that he was deeply devoted to your mother and very proud of his accomplished children. May memories get you through this difficult time.

Judy and I are so saddened by Uncle Joe's passing. We were out of town and not reachable and could not be with you at the funeral. Uncle Joe was a formative influence in my life and I was fortunate to visit with him for many successive summers. He was the epitome of an upstanding, moral, and proud Jew. May his memory serve as an inspiration and blessing for all of us.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. I did not know Joseph personally, but am very familiar with Mt. Sinai, and it is a beautiful cemetary.

To the Families of Joseph S. Guss:

Although I did not personally know Mr. Guss, nevertheless, I was more than aware, in my growing up years, of his achievements and dedications.

May his memories and love be a blessing and comfort to each of you, during this sad and difficult time.

A lifetime never seems to be long enough, when someone as Mr. Guss, had so much, yet to give.

God Bless his memory.

Dear Steve, Bob, Barbara and Aunt Pauline,
We are so saddened to hear of your loss. Uncle Joe was a man of great kindness and generosity, both of spirit and material things, and he contributed much to our years of growing up with Omaha summers. We wish you comfort and warm memories.
