Barney's smile, cheerful demeanor and that fabulous pool shot will be sorely missed. We need more Barneys in this world. Take solace in his journey to a better place.

Craig, Gary and Debbie

Most sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. He will be sorely missed by many for the daily contributions he made in their lives. He meant not only a lot to his own family but to his extended Papio family, across many generations. He touched many people including me. When visiting home from the Air Force Academy I always made a mandatory stop at The Golden Rule to speak with Mr. Shives. I remember his voice encouraging each member of our many baseball teams on to victory and occasionally scolding an errant umpire. We all have had our lives enriched by knowing and having Barney as part it. We will also get to see Barney in the afterlife as he now with his Holy Father and assisting him in running the show, making heaven a better place. I can see God sipping and eating one of Barney's fruitcakes right now.

God Bless.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Barney was more like a member of the family than a friend of the family. Loved his sense of humor and always being there for my Dad (Chuck). Brings back wonderful memories of Faith Church, The Golden Rule and Midland's fruit cake. He will be missed.

I was deeply saddened when i heard that Barney had passed. I will miss his greetings each week in church and will be sad that the pew behind me will now be bare. He will be deeply missed

I was sorry to hear of Barney's passing. I met him at Midlands Hospital when my mother was a patient there in 2003. Although I didn't know him well, he seemed like such a "people person," and I have never forgotten him. I am so sorry for your loss. I know he will be missed by many.

It was so sad to hear of Barney's passing. I remember going into the Golden Rule Supermarket as a kid, and as a teenager, I remember the support Barney gave the Papillion HS Band. Those are times I will remember fondly for the rest of my life.
My heartfelt sympathy to the Shives family.

I remember that when I was little, my mother and I would go to The Golden Rule to shop, and Barney would always give me a lollipop. We would sit with he and his wife, sometimes at the baseball games, and he would always tease me. Everyone at Midlands loved Barney! He had an incredible sense of humor!

Craig,Gary and Debbie,
On behalf of myself and my family, our hearts and prayers go out to you and yours. I cannot describe the importance and mentoring by Barney during my time working at the Golden Rule that is a life lesson more important than you know. He instilled a work ethic and attitude that the community will never forget in family, business and all of the organizations he came in contact with. A great man with a never-ending smile and a shining star of great magnitude that never grew tired of giving and for that we can be forever in thanks to the one and only "Barney".
His legacy will remain in place in our community wherever you look for all future generations.

I can't think of anyone more loved than Barney Shives. He always had a story to tell and a smile to lend you, especially if you didn't have one. I know that Chuck and Nellie and later on Chuck and Susan counted Barney (and Helen) among their very closest friends. When I married John, no one welcomed me to Faith Presbyterian more than Barney. You are all in my prayers as you bury your dad. Blessings and wonderful memories on all of you.

I remember as a little girl going into Golden Rule and seeing Mrs Botnicheck and Barney and they were always so friendly and kind and helpful. I am gong to really miss Barney, I saw him all of the time whenever I went into Midlands Hospital. He always had a kind and encourageing word. When he came to Dad's funeral(Howard Jones) I thought he would be here for a long time yet. He will be greatly missed by me and the rest of my family.

Debbie, Gary, & Craig,
I am so deeply sorry to hear of the loss of your father. I have so many fond memories of all the times our families spent together. From the times at Faith Church to all the get togethers at Dublin Dr. Our fathers shared a special bond. From all their business interests to late night phone calls on those stormy nights taking turns informing each other as to how full the Papio Creek was and in the later years the coffee club at McDonalds. Your father was such an asset to the city of Papillion. He will be truly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

He was a great boss to work for. Me and my family send our deepest thoughts and prayers to the family, Especially Craig, Gary & Debbie. He will be missed by many. May God bless you all at this time of loss.

To Barney's Family:

If I were asked to name one person that represents Papillion being a special place -or- that one person that represents "community" it would be Barney!

My generation has so much to learn from Barney and from so many others from his generation (like all of his friends at the Senior Center at the morning McDonald's coffee club).

Barney you will be missed. Thanks for being a friend to so many, but I especially thank you for the personal words of wisdom you always shared with me. I really valued our conversations these last 6 months!

Thanks my friend.

Barney gave me my first job as a bag boy at the Golden Rule. He was a great boss and taught me many positive things that helped me in later years. Just wanted the family to know he will be missed. Barney, Helen & family joined our family as charter members of Faith Presbyterian Church in the early 1960s. I have fond memories of the wonderful people along with the Shives family working side by side to bring Faith Church to life. We would hold family picnic on our family farm east of Papillion. I am 64 years old now and still think often of growing up in a wonderful place like Papillion and knowing awesome people like Barney. God bless the Shives' family and we are praying for your comfort during this time.

When I am dead, my dearest

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.

I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain:
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.
