Tak Wan Obituary

Wan, Tak Jong "Doris"
Nov 15, 1910 - Nov 23, 2009
Bowling Green, KY. Born in Guanzhou, China while her father served as a general on the province. Her mother died when she was very young, and she later had a very good education that her wonderful stepmother helped with. She graduated from the Canton Girls Teacher College. She later studied in Tokyo, Japan at the Women's College. This is where she married her husband, Henry Wan, also native of China. The Wans were married for 58 years before his death in 1994. In her earlier years she worked as a housewife and taught dance, music and art. She also was a librarian in Yao Peng Canton, China. With the coming of the Chinese Civil War in 1948, she, her husband, mother-in-law, and two sons left China in 1948 to Hong Kong. The family came to Los Angeles, CA in 1956 for their sons' educations. She then taught in the Chinese School in Los Angeles. In 1967 the Wan's came to Bowling Green, KY, because their older son had established a medical practice in the Morgantown area. She worked for her son at Wan's Medical Clinic and she and her husband were the owners and operators of the House of Wan Restaurants in Bowling Green. She was always smiling and greeting the people who came into the medical clinic and later to the restaurants. She had a great love for the people of her adopted homeland, and especially for the people of Warren and Butler counties. Mrs. Wan became a naturalized American citizen because of her love of this country and the freedoms she found here, especially the freedom of expression and the ability to succeed if you work hard. She loved traveling and visited almost every country in the world over the years. Her heart, however, was always with Kentucky and the people she loved here, including all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and the wonderful people who came into her life here. She loved music, floor dancing, singing, art and playing the piano. Preceded in death by father, Lian Ju Zhang; mother, Young Lo Cheng; brother, Dam Ming Zhang; sister, Tak Shun Zhang. Survived by son, Dr. Richard T. C. Wan, Morgantown, KY; son, Alan Y.C.
