Smart, funny, great husband and father, good son and brother, great friend. Great friend who I will miss so much.
I'm not sure I've met another man so comfortable in his own skin which made him really great to be around.
Goodbye my friend,

Jo Ellen & Family

As I read all the wonderful notes from your friends and neighbors, it would be difficult to add more of what a great guy Walt was.

I was there at your wedding and also when your children were born. It has been a great friendship for over thirty years. I am so glad I got to
visit with you while visiting family
in Omaha last October. Please remember that I am
thinking of you and your family.

To the family,
Walt always knew how to get you to smile on your worst day. He was one of the first people to know both times I found out I was to be a father. The first thing he did was look at me and say "Good luck, kid!" There isnt enough time or words to describe who great of a guy Walt "IS". For he will never be gone to me, just down the road a bit. See ya later buddy.

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Walt's passing. We first met in 7th grade and once in high school and several years after we spent an enormous amount of time together. Such a gentle soul and naturally funny man. Even though I haven't maintained contact with Walt (entirely my doing) I always have and always will consider him a friend and a key part of the foundation of my life. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I have only fond memories of Walt, we met in junior high and have been friends since then. Although I moved to the Pacific NW we have kept in touch. I know how much he loved his family and life itself! I am glad we visited last summer and met Lucy and Sam! My love to all of you during this time.

JoEllen,

Sue L. called me the night of Walt's death. I am so sorry for your loss. We really enjoyed the time we spent with Walt while we lived with Sue. He was always there for her to lend a hand after Dave died. I heard so many Walt and Dave stories. I drove by Sue's house a few months ago, Walt was outside so I stopped to say hi. He was tinkering with his car and talked and talked. The memorial in the paper was perfect!! He will be so missed.

Amanda was so sad to hear of his death and said she will miss seeing him at the Justn Thyme resturant.

You and the family are in our thoughts and prayers. - Suzanne Prock and Amanda

When someone passes people always find the kindest words and the best memories of a person. With Walto, it would be near impossible to find a bad memory of him. You always walked away from him with a smile on your face and in your heart. It seems unfair he is gone, I am honored and blessed to have known him and called him friend. Heaven got a lot more exciting on January 12. Thanks for the memories.

Walt was a great guy, kind and generous. Even as a teenager, he was accepting of everyone and had a quick wit and a smile. My sincere sympathy to your entire family.- Mindy Epperson Hightower, Benson Class of 1969

I'm going to miss one of the best neighbors I ever had. Walt was a lot of fun to be around, always teasing...and bringing a smile to my face. I was so looking forward to spring, and seeing him putz around like he does, and having my little chats with him. Now, whenever I look at the Green Spruce in my front yard, I will think of Walt. Always trying to get me to cut it down. So...now I have an even better reason to leave it there!
I didn't know Walt that long, (3 years) but I like what I came to know...a lot.
He never minded when I came and asked to borrow a tool, or, could he please put some air in my wheel barrow tire, or anything else I needed. He was just one of those guys!
He didn't seem to rest much, he was always busy. But he never let his "busy" interfere wtih a friendly chat, or a joke or two.
Yes...I am going to miss Walt a lot.
My thoughts are with you JoEllen, and with Walt's parents across the street. Please ask for anything you might need, cup of coffee, company, chat...help with any errands Walt's parents might need. He was always there for everybody else...so now its our turn to be there for you and Walt.
Your neighbor...Jan

We are so saddened to hear the news about Walt. I had the pleasure of working with Walt and enjoyed and respected his knowledge, skills and personality. We all did. Walt would be visiting and while he was here, he would introduce himself as Walt, Walt Disney. He told my children and their friends they he had tickets waiting for them at Disney World. They believed him and thought he was funny. He always made us smile and we feel blessed to have known him. He will be greatly missed.
Our deepest sympathy to your family.

JoEllen,
We are so saddened to hear of Walt. The fishing trips to South Dakota were some of the greatest we ever took... Can still hear Walt reading that paperback book real loud by the campfire while the rest of us giggled in our tents.
Again, our deepest sympathy...

I learned of Walt's passing from our BHS facebook, and while I've rarely been back to Omaha other than to visit family after moving away in 1973, Walt was a sincere, funny guy, and even though I had then elected to be in ROTC for a couple of years, he never made fun of me as many did. I remember that. God Bless You and Your Family.

To the Family,
I only know of Walt through his dad, bragging about him all the time. He is very proud of his son and grandsons. I loved hearing the stories of the trips and his trade. Walt was supposed to out live Walt SR. so he could spend his money. We always had a good laugh over that one:) God must've needed a good worker in this sad time in the world. My prayers are with you and your Family. I want my Obituary to read just like Walts!!!

To Walt's family, My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Even though I only knew Walt through my late husband (Don Nelson), Walt always had a smile and a wry comment whatever the situtation was. I'm sure Don was there nearly the pearly gates to welcome Walt home. Bet they are swapping fishing stories and planning a fishing trip in heaven.
