June Shumway Obituary

VERONA >> June E. Shumway, 89, of Verona, N.Y. died at home after a brief illness on May 30, 2013.
She was born in Duluth, Minn., on Feb. 20, 1924, a daughter of John and Lily (Nyberg) Kummerwold. She graduated from Duluth Central High School in June of 1943.
June married Robert A. Shumway Sr. in Duluth, Minn., on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1943, while he was on a three-day pass from the Army. After moving around the country with her husband and children, they settled down in Verona in 1955. She worked for a short while on Griffiss AFB in Rome, N.Y., before becoming a homemaker and raising three sons. When her husband Bob retired, she took over his position at Rich Plan of Utica. She worked there for 20 years, receiving numerous sales recognitions.
She was adopted by many as Gramma June and always had plenty of stories to share of her years growing up, her family and friends. June loved a good garage sale and had a favorite fishing hole. June was predeceased by her husband, Robert Sr. in November 1993 and her son, Robert Jr. in June 1983. June is survived by two sons, Thomas R. and his wife Linda (Lessard) Shumway Sr. of Somersworth, N.H. and Claude (aka Denny) and Elaine (Lawless) Shumway of Verona, N.Y. and daughter-in-law Melissa (Alexander) Shumway of Boiling Springs, S.C.; six grandchildren, Tara (Scott) Pitcher, Bryan (Julie) Shumway, Thomas R. Shumway Jr., Karen (Ben) Hayes, Joe (Jen) Shumway, Suzanne Shumway; six great- grandchildren, Sam, Max, Sherman, Rebekah, Alex and Emma; and longtime best friend Iva Glaviano.
The family would like to thank Dr. Jim Vanderhoof, the 4th floor nurses of Oneida Healthcare Center and Vineall Ambulance for their compassion and care. Special thanks to June's caregiver and fast friend Keisha; Carolyn Kaplan; and Hospice of New Hartford.
In memory of June, contributions may be made to the Robert A. Shumway Jr. Memorial Award at V.V.S. Central School, Verona, N.Y. 13478 or Hospice & Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, N.Y. 13413. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Oneota Cemetery, Duluth, Minn. Arrangements are under the care of Malecki Funeral Home.
