I met Jack in Australia in early 1994 when he visited our fish quarantine facility.I was looking through the book he sent us when he got home & decided to search his name & was dismayed to see he had passed. He was a generous, kind & knowledgable man who loved with a passion to share facts about fish.He is a loss.

Just learned of Dr. Gratzek's passing. I was a student of his in the early '70s seeking a BS degree in Animal Science. To say that I was intimidated being in the Vet School was an understatement, but taking microbiology added another level. Dr. Gratzek's approach to teaching was unlike any other professor's I encountered at UGA. He related to his students not as their superior but as a mentor whose goal was to see that we all left his course with a working knowledge of what we were studying. Almost all of us achieved that goal but every one of us left his course with a deep respect and admiration for one of, if not the best, teachers we ever had the privilege of learning from. Our reluctance to leave his class when time was up says all that needs to be said about him. My condolences to his family and, indeed, a life well lived.

Sorry to hear that Jack passed away. Loved the obit, he certainly could be forceful! He took me under his wing as a lab technician, then as a graduate student in the 1970's. After my graduation from vet school and completion of a Ph.D., I returned to Athens, first as a post-doc, then as a practicing veterinarian. I'd run into Jack at the Y, and he'd introduce me to members with, I sensed, a bit of pride that one of his prodigal sons had returned and come out okay. My sincere condolences to Kathy and the family, may Jack rest in peace, a life well lived.

Kathy, Jack and I were partners in his airplane in the 90s. It was a pleasure knowing someone who enjoyed and was excited about flying as I was. There are no words to ease your grief - just know that with the love and care of family and friends, you'll get through.

Please accept sincere condolences from The Blankenships on Jack’s passing. I know when my Dad was alive, he and Jack were flying and tennis pals. While sad for his departure from this earth, he obviously touched many Souls during his life well lived.

Dear Kathy and family, I know it's been a tough year for all of you. Jack was department head when I came to Athens in 1973 and was an outstanding and demanding researcher. When I left the lab and went on to being a science/medical librarian, I immediately reconnected with Jack and the rest of the department until I retired in 2010. It was a joy to work with the faculty in the College. May Jack rest in peace and you all remember the good times.

Jack was a longtime friend and tennis buddy who always had a smile and joke to share. He had many friends who will miss him greatly. His dedication to the Classic City Tennis Club, which he was a co-founder of, was legend. He was always out working on the courts, repairing, lining, and keeping the weeds away. His work as the president kept him busy with the planning activities and many other duties. He and Kathy , also a tennis player, had a wonderful, full life together, and they brought much joy to those who knew them.
