Sara Callaway Obituary

Sara Tullos Callaway, age 92 died peacefully at Talmadge Terrace on January 26, 2015 after a period of declining health.
Born on May 31, 1922 in Eudora, Arkansas, Sara married Joseph A. Callaway at a very young age, had two children and probably expected to be a farmer's wife. However Joe, feeling a call to Christian Ministry, left farming at the age of 27 to begin 10 years of education culminating in his life work as Professor of Old Testament and Archaeology at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY.
Not to be left behind, Sara became a "Dig Wife" living on excavations at Bethel, Shechem, Jerusalem and ultimately Ai where Joe was director of the excavation. Sara was featured in the article, "They Also Dug! Archaeologists' Wives and Their Stories" in the publication Near Eastern Archaeology September 2004. Sara is credited in the excavation publications on Ai as Camp Director because of her responsibility for feeding up to 30 staff members each day, most of the time without refrigeration.
We will remember our mother as strong, resourceful, loving, having a great sense of humor, and forgiving. Several people have told us they never heard Sara say an unkind work about another person.
Sara was predeceased by her beloved husband Joe on August 23, 1988. She is survived by her son Bill Callaway and his wife Claire, her daughter Linda Biggers and her husband Keith, and three grandchildren Emily, Cam and Charlie Callaway.
The family will receive friends at The First Baptist Church, Athens, GA at the corner of Pulaski and Hancock at 2PM on Thursday, January 29th with the funeral to follow at 3 pm. Interment will follow at Oconee Hill Cemetery.

Gay and I remember Sara fondly. We loved our time together and wish she were here to celebrate this last week with us. She would have enjoyed it immensely!

Our Christmas Card to Sara was returned this year which prompted me to check further. Gay and I were both sorry to hear of Sara's passings. We would have loved one more visit with her. She was a favorite of ours and we enjoyed visiting with her and having her visit with us. Her trip to California was the best. We loved our after Sunday School lunches at ACC and Jennings Mill. She was an amazing lady in every regard and we will remember her always. A wonderful thoughtful and gracious lady whom we were blessed to have known and loved.

I am deeply sorry to hear of Sara's passing. I have been out of the mainstream for a while and only learned of this, today. Joe was a mainstream at SBTS when I was there and I will always hold them in my heart. I saw Sara at church and kept her on my prayer list. Sincere condolences and love.

How well I remember Sara's quiet, abiding help at the 'Ai excavation as well as her presence around Jerusalem and Louisville. I grieve that she is no longer among us.

Neva passed on the information that your mother had died. No doubt you will miss her; that is as it should be. But thankfully you have the blessing of knowing that she lived a full and meaningful life.
