Robert Alexander Obituary

ALEXANDER, ROBERT D., The Reverend Robert D. Alexander, 80, passed away Friday, June 8, 2007, after a lengthy illness. He was born October 7, 1926, to Reed and Mary Roquemore Alexander. He was educated at Young Harris College, the University of Georgia, and Columbia Theological Seminary. He served the Lord and the Presbyterian Church faithfully and enthusiastically for more than 50 years, beginning with a four-church circuit - Clarksville, Hellen, Sawtee, and Nachoocee - in north Georgia. He also served as pastor in Waynesboro, GA, and at PhiIadelphia Presbyterian Church in Forest Park, GA, before coming to serve at First Presbyterian Church, Leesburg, FL, in 1967. He served the Leesburg church for 26 years, retiring in 1993. During those years he was very active in Central Florida Presbytery (formerly St. Johns Presbytery), particularly in the areas of Missions and of New Church Development. He began an annual missions conference at the Leesburg church, one which still continues and is now known as the Robert D. Alexander Missions Conference. He was instrumental in the development of three new churches in the Presbytery: Lake Square Presbyterian, North Lake Presbyterian, and New Life Presbyterian. After retirement he served interim pastorates in Archer, Live Oak, and Apopka and was Parish Associate at First Presbyterian, Gainesville, FL. To honor his many years at the Leesburg church, Central Florida Presbytery designated him Pastor Emeritus. Preceding him in death were his parents, his brothers, William and Peter, and his first wife, Nelle Perkins Alexander. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Hubbard Alexander, Apopka, FL; three sons, Roy (Lynda), Winston-Salem, NC, Joseph (Cheryl), Orlando; the Reverend Jesse Alexander (Heather), Minneola, FL; two daughters, Rachel McMahan (Tom) Virginia Beach, VA, the Reverend Rebekah Maul (Derek), Brandon, FL; two stepsons, Glenn Hubbard (Connie), New York City, and Gregg Hubbard, Nashville, TN. Twelve grandchildren survive him: Reed, Micah, and Faith McMahan; Andrew and Naomi Maul; Jordan, Lindsay, Seth, Jared, and Sarah Alexander; Raph and Will Hubbard. Also surviving are two brothers, The Reverend Charles Alexander, Baldwin, GA, and The Reverend George Alexander, London, OH; several nieces, nephews and cousins. A legion of those inspired and influenced by his ministry attest to his devoted service to his Lord. A memorial service will be held at 11AM on Saturday, June 16th, at First Presbyterian Church, Apopka. Officiating will be The Reverend Michael Ulasewich, pastor of First Presbyterian, Apopka, FL; Dr. Bryan Stamper, Sr., pastor of St. Paul's Presbyterian, Ocoee, FL; and Dr. Paige McRight, Executive Presbyter of Central Florida Presbytery. In lieu of flowers, it was Bob's request that memorials be given to Missions, First Presbyterian Church, 500 S. Highland Ave., Apopka, FL 32703.

In quiet moments, Jesse, I pray that God will fill you with thoughts about how your dad has shaped and honed you for the ministry to which you have been called. Your ministry will continue to be a tribute to Christ and a blessing to your dad, as he now enjoys the homecoming he so richly deserves.

Blessings to you, Heather and the rest of the family.
