James Hughes Obituary
James Elwood Hughes, 71 of Hope, passed away surrounded by family on November 25, 2024 at MyMichigan Medical Center in Midland. He was born to the late James W. and Kathleen (Hulette) Hughes on December 15, 1952 in Frankfort, KY.
Jim had a lifelong dream of opening a restaurant that would not only serve delicious food, but also bring people together in the heart of Midland. With unwavering determination and the support of Marinell, Jim turned that dream into a reality on November 25, 2009, when they opened Diamond Jim's in downtown Midland. The restaurant quickly became a cornerstone of the community, a place where friends and strangers alike could enjoy a warm meal and a friendly smile.
Jim's commitment to exceptional service and his passion for hospitality were evident in everything he did. He was known for always going above and beyond for each guest, ensuring that everyone who walked through the door felt welcomed. In 2013, Jim was honored with the Downtown Business Person of the Year award, a testament to his dedication and the positive impact he had on Midland.
Jim's legacy lives on through Diamond Jim's, where his delicious soups and warm hospitality left a lasting impression on every guest. While Jim will be deeply missed, his generosity and kindness continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by his beloved life partner; Marinell Schafer; children; Donald Hughes, Jody (Brenda) Hughes, grandchildren; Kaia Kathleen Hughes, Danny James Hughes, siblings; David Hughes, Kathy Molen, Danny Hughes, Marsha Hall, Melissa Hughes and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will take place at 11:00am on November 30, 2024 at Smith-Miner Funeral Home (Midland, MI). Friends may visit with the family from 5:00pm – 7:00pm on November 29, 2024 at Smith-Miner Funeral Home and from 10:00am until time of service on Saturday. A private family graveside service will take place at New Hope Cemetery in Hope, MI.
In lieu of flowers those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the family in his honor.
