Family-Placed Obituary

ALFONSO LOUIS BALDI, Jr. Alfonso Louis Baldi, Jr., a renowned chemist and metallurgist, died peacefully at his home in Jupiter, FL on August 13, 2012. He was 89. Mr.Baldi was born and raised in South Philadelphia, PA. During World War II he served in the United States Navy from 1942-1946. Following an honorable discharge from military service, he attended the University of Pennsylvania where he received a BS in Chemistry and a Masters of Science in Metallurgy. Mr. Baldi was employed by Alloy Surfaces Company, Inc. for over 45 years and served as vice-president and director of research and development. While at Alloy Surfaces he invented pyrophoric activated metal coatings - metal that when exposed to oxygen in the air self-ignites. This discovery became an integral part of this country's Patriot missile system and was extensively used in both the Gulf and Iraq wars to destroy enemy missiles. Mr. Baldi devoted his life to science and his family. He is responsible for over 100 scientific patents. He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Nina Rita Gallo Baldi; six children, Theresa Toohey and husband, Richard, Anita Gabler and husband, Jim, Alfonso L. Baldi and wife, Michele, Benjamin Baldi and wife, Dorothy, Patricia Holloway and husband, Gary and Ginny Baldi Marks; ten grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 2400 No. Providence Road, Media, PA on Friday, August 17 at 11:30 AM. Friends may call prior to the mass between 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM. Entombment will take place at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
