Mr. Brooks, 76, was with his wife, Muffy, on a cruise of the Panama Canal when he became sick. He had been suffering from cancer.
"His love for people crossed all walks of life," said Gail Coniglio, a longtime friend and president pro tem of the Palm Beach Council. "Whether it was a president of a company, a CEO, a legislative representative or the garbage man, he was kind, respectful and always considerate of who they were and how they fit into his life."
Mr. Brooks served an almost unheard of 17 years as general manager of WPTV Channel 5 after holding the station manager job for a couple years.
Television was not his first career. He had been a priest, but left the clergy when the Catholic Church would not denounce the Vietnam War, said Bernadette O'Grady, program director at WPTV and a longtime friend.
Mr. Brooks' faith remained with him and shaped the way he saw broadcasting.
Mr. Brook's focus on local programming earned him a national reputation as a trailblazer, General Manager Steve Wasserman said
"He didn't view the television station as a profit center, which it certainly was," Wasserman said. "He believed the community came first. He believed that local news came first."
The station would earn viewers' loyalty through good work in the community, Mr. Brooks believed, rather than flashy spots about the station being number one in ratings, O'Grady said.
Mr. Brooks founded the station's Food for Families drive 25 years ago. The station is now renaming the drive for him.
Though he had shed the cloth, Brooks continued to emit the aura of a spiritual advisor. People came to him with their problems. And he took a personal interest in their lives, learning the names of their spouse, children, pets.
"If you told Bill Brooks a secret, you may as well have said it in confessional," Coniglio said. "It never went any farther."
Mr. Brooks loved a party. Before he retired in 1998, he passed out green carnations for St. Patrick's Day and red ones on Valentine's Day to every woman on the staff.
Mr. Brooks lived on Palm Beach for nearly four decades.
He served on the town council for eight years. In 2008, in the most expensive council election ever, the four-term councilman lost in a surprising upset to David Rosco.
Mr. Brooks was out of the country when his beloved Red Sox won the world championship in 2004. When the team won again in 2007, this time with Mr. Brooks watching, friends joked that the team took a second title just so he could witness it.
Now, Coniglio said, Mr. Brooks will be behind home plate at every game.
Funeral arrangements will not be set until Mr. Brook's wife returns to the country, O'Grady said.

Bill, I hardly knew thee and yet you changed the course of my life, as you did by inspiring countless others. I believe that God sent you to be a disciple among us and now he has called you to receive your reward for doing his work. May we all be blessed with your presence again some day.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Bill Brooks. Forgive my tardiness, but I just found out about his death in the "Florida Irish American" publication. I knew him as Father Brooks at Cardinal Newman High Schhol in l972. I went to talk to him about getting married, and he graciously offered to perform the ceremony. He did just that and made my marriage so much more meaningful. I will never forget his words of wisdom to me. What a spiritual and caring person he was! He must have a very high place in Heaven with all the good he did on this earth. May he rest in peace, and may his family have the consolation of beautiful memories.

Broadcasting is jokingly referred to as a business populated by C students. In the case of Bill Brooks, he was A+, honor roll. His natural curiosity, integrity, competitiveness and honor set him apart. WPTV was number one because it was run by the best operator in the market. I will miss him as a broadcast professional and a friend.

Martha, how you must miss your beloved Bill. I heard about Bill's passing from Margie. I loved his sense of humor when I met him at your home several years ago. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and the family and friends. It appears Bill was much loved and respected by all who knew him. Linda & Johneric in NH

There may not be a picture of Bill Brooks in the dictionary next to the definition of "mensch," but there ought to be. In his long and distinguished service to this community, he gave a human face to concepts like integrity, compassion, warmth and class.

Bill Brooks was on our University of Florida advisory council---he hired many of our grads for WPTV. He made sure his station served the community in so many ways. Bill was such a good, decent person, who tried to make the world a better place. Rest in peace.

As students at Cardinal Newman, we quickly learned that Fr. Brooks loved Boston, the Red Sox and Boston College. We also knew that he loved "his kids" at Newman. How fortunate we were to be those kids! Fr. Brooks had a profound impact on my life, and I have always been grateful for his wisdom, humor and kindness.

I first met Bill in 1967 when he visited Cardinal Newman to speak on religious vocations. Over the years, he became a mentor, secured my college scholarship, became my first boss in TV,stood for my wife as a U.S. citizen - but has always been a friend and consiglieri. He loved my impersonation of him & parodies of his over thought out memos.
The last time I saw him was racing to give him a gift at the Paramount he had forgotten at a 75th birthday thrown by WPTV vets. I said, "Bill, do you realize we are standing..." He finished,"...on the exact spot your Dad met JFK?" He was had lost nothing on his fast ball, was correct(as usual),and had added another special Irish Boston magic moment to that spot in another place in time.
Farewell, for now, Bud Boy. Keep the beer cold and brace yourself for my next work, " Bill's Memo on Eternity" (I'll have Muffy proof the Latin grammar).

You brought a smile to so many faces over so many years. This world is a better place because of you. You were and will remain a role model to those whose path you crossed. There won't be another Bill Brooks. My condolences to Muffy and Sarah. Rest in Peace, my friend, and thank you.

My heart goes out to Muff and the entire Brooks Family.I know what a huge loss this is to each and every one of you. Your Uncle Bill was certainly an exceptional man, who valued what is truly important in life, and everyone whose path he crossed seemed better from knowing him. I am blessed to have the honor of knowing him, and also being able to call him "Uncle Bill" growing up.
May the wonderful life he lead be a lesson to us all,
With Love and Friendhip, Chrissy Liva Smith

Bill Brooks was many things to many people, he was a boss, a friend, a counselor and an innovator. He was also the consummate animal lover. I remember a sign just outside the front door to the old Channel 5 Studio on Flagler that read something like "Pets always welcome". On the occasions when my wife took our dog to work with her, Bill would summon Gracie to his office and entertain our drooling, shedding 150 pound Saint Bernard until Julie ended her shift. I don't know much but I know that wherever Bill is, he is surrounded by smiling faces with wagging tails. Rest in Peace, Bill.

Bill Brooks was like a kindly uncle to those of us who worked in the WPTV newsroom in the late 70's and early 80's. He was smart, funny, handsome, classy and the epitome of a gentleman.
Godspeed, Bill.

What a wonderful and compassionate man. I had the pleasure of working for Bill Brooks at WPTV in 1979 & 1980. He always had a smile and willing to listen to what was going on in everyone's life. He will be greatly missed.

I have never met a kinder and gentler person than Bill. We worked next door to each other a few years back and happened to watch the tragedy of 9/11 together. I was so frightened as I had children in elementary school and it was such a chaotic day. But Bill was so reassuring and comforting and gave me such direction. I will miss you and our lunches so much, Bill. I'll have a Harp for you today. Love, Cinder

Mr. Brooks makes me think of dog day Fridays, the fact that he always referred to me as 'joyful one', the Latin translation of my last name, and that when my calls to arrange an interview with a major politician fell on deaf ears on an election night...he picked up the phone and said 'Bud Boy, get over here'....and it was done.
Blessed to have known you, Mr. Brooks.

We are so sad to lose our loving Uncle Bill. You have been such a wonderful inspiration to our family throughout the years. I will never forget when you and Auntie Martha brought me to Florida and let me experience my first plane ride, trip to Disney World and 12 wonderful days in Florida... not to mention all the other times you opened your home to me and my friends. I love you so much Uncle Bill and I will never forget you!!

My mother and I spent three wonderful Christmases with Bill and Martha at Ashford Castle in Ireland. We missed them this past year as we weren't able to make it over, and I will always regret not getting to see him one last time. My memory of him making merry at Ashford will stay with me forever. God bless you, Bill.

Bill Brooks was one of my very best friends for over 35 years. We celebrated our birthdays together every year. We traveled together. No one had a better time than Bill. He loved and was loved in turn by my three sons. We shall all miss him terribly and will see to it that his beloved Muffy is well taken care of. God Bless you Bill. You put up a good fight never complaing and maintaining your sense of humor during the chemo sessions and recent surgery.

Bill Brooks was a mensch... "a person of integrity and honor". And I say that fondly as a former competitor in television news.
I have many wonderful memories and feel so saddened to know that his voice is now silenced. God certainly broke the mold after he created Bill.
Rest in peace, Bill. You've earned it.

While there are many great stories to tell about Bill, the best was when I first met him in 1990. It was during my job interview for an editor position at WPTV. He asked me "you are a tape editor, what could you possibly have in your briefcase?" I told him "A six-pack of Bud in case this doesn't go well." He immediately said "Hire him NOW!" He opened up his doors for many of us if we needed to talk at anytime, and he was a great listener. I haven't had a boss come even close in all these years. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace, Bill.

Father Bill was my guidance counselor at Cardinal Newman many years ago. He had an uncanny ability to connect with teenagers. We all loved him. Years later I worked with him and couldn't get used to calling him Mr. Brooks. He said Father Bill was just fine. Yes he was. May he rest in peace in the arms of the Lord.

We are all so sad at the loss of our beloved Uncle Bill. Many knew him as the legendary newsman from Palm Beach, but to me, he was simply my Uncle, a kind, generous and faith-filled man who would move mountains for his family. I love you and will miss you always. We all love you, Auntie Martha, and are here for you.
