75 years old, a long-time resident of North Palm Beach, Florida and Beaver Creek, Colorado, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, December 27, 2012 following a battle with leukemia.The son of the late Conrad Walter and Viola B. Schaefer, he was born in 1936 in Detroit, Michigan and moved to Florida in 1947. He graduated from Palm Beach High School, class of 1954, from Palm Beach Junior College and The University of Florida in 1960 where he received a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering. Mr. Schaefer began his civil engineering career with Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Washington from 1960 -1962 and earned his Professional Engineering designation in 1964. He worked as a civil engineer for Hutcheon Engineers from 1962-1965 and was the Assistant Engineer for Palm Beach County. In 1969, he founded and served as chairman of the board of Conrad W. Schaefer, Consulting Engineers which later became Schaefer Fagan & Associates. Mr. Schaefer was a member and an active part of The Economic Council of Palm Beach County, on the board of numerous local banks and a major contributor to the development of Palm Beach County. He was also chairman of the board of directors from 1986-1988 of the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County. He was a member of the Lost Tree Club. Conrad was an avid sports fisherman and yachtsman. He was a great fan of the University of Florida Gators and the Miami Dolphins. He maintained a lifelong love of gardening and art. Conrad was a true friend and mentor who will be missed by all he touched. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 47 years, Gretchen Schaefer; daughter, Erika Sousa and her husband John of North Palm Beach, FL; son Conrad B. Schaefer of Malibu, CA; grandchildren, Bennett, Gretchen and Whitney Sousa of North Palm Beach, FL and sister, Linda A. Cooper and her husband David of North Palm Beach, FL.The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 30th from 6-8 p.m. at Aycock-Riverside Funeral and Cremation Center in Jupiter. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, December 31st at 10 a.m. with Dr. Kenneth Mahanes of Lost Tree Chapel officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park in Tequesta. Dear Gretchen, Erica, and CB. I am so sorry to hear of Conrad's passing. My memories of him are how he filled a room with his size and larger than life personality; also remembering our hanging around together when we were single. What fun we had! I will miss him.
