ESME ROOT Obituary

Family-Placed Obituary

ESME BARNES ROOT September 3, 1948 - September 6, 2012 Esme Root of Palm Beach County, Florida and Wayne, ME died peacefully on Thursday, September 6 at her Wayne home in the company of loved ones. She was 64. Esme's natural grace, intelligence, heart and tenacity sustained her and all who loved her during a year-long struggle with ovarian cancer. With the devoted care of her daughter, Maegan, the support of her son, Ethan and son-in-law, Josh Gaffey, and the aid of her medical teams at Dana Farber Institute in Boston and the Alfond Center in Augusta, ME, Esme remained fully engaged in her treatment and her life until her birthday on Monday, September 3, 2012. Born Esme Alexandra Barnes in New York City, NY Esme was raised in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ with summers spent in Wayne, ME shaping her personal vision of paradise. Her father, Dr. William A. Barnes, trained generations of surgeons as senior clinical professor of surgery at the Cornell-Weill Medical College/New York Hospital and maintained private practices in New York and New Jersey. Her mother, Dr. Shirley Mayer Barnes, served variously as Director of New York's Child and Maternal Health Bureau, Deputy Commissioner of Public Health for New York City, and New Jersey State Health Commissioner. Always proud of her parents' accomplishments, Esme followed her graduation from Emma Willard School in Troy, NY by training as a nurse at Briarcliff College in the Hudson Valley, but ultimately devoted her life to her children and family. Eventually she found great joy in bringing her warm and welcoming nature to work when she established her 1836 Franklin House in Wayne as a seasonal bed and breakfast in the summer of 2001. She was an adventurous and free-spirited woman who never missed an opportunity to see as much as the world would offer to her. Esme loved travel and particularly delighted in the trips she took with her daughter to Istanbul, Paris and Tokyo, but also lived for a time in Ireland and loved her most recent trip abroad to Italy. Even more recently, accompanied by her son Ethan, she realized a life-long desire to tour the Androscoggin skies from a sea-plane less than two weeks before her death. Esme is predeceased by her parents and eldest child, Stefan Alexander Sessler. She is survived by her daughter, Maegan Fee Gaffey, her son Ethan Samuel Root, and her brothers Kit Barnes, Robin Barnes, and George Barnes. She will forever be missed by countless more as she was a devoted friend, daughter, sister, aunt, and cousin as well as an accomplished and thoughtful hostess with the gift of truly caring for others and a smile for all those she met. A private memorial was held this weekend in Wayne, ME. Another memorial will be held in Florida in early October. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Esme's name can be made to the Androscoggin Lake Improvement Corporation (androscogginlake.org), the Dana Farber Institute in Boston (tinyurl.com/danafarberdonate), and the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care (tinyurl.com/alfondcenter). Dear Family of Esme,
I only knew Esme for a short while before she passed away. I saw a woman of incredible strength, true sincerity and eyes with depth and compassion. A truly remarkable woman in every way. If there ever was a testament to one's life; Esme's is clear through her daughter Maegan who every day pays tribute to her beautiful mother by living her life just the way her mom did by being the best mother any child could ever ask for. I still think of you often Esme as you impressed me so much. It's actually easy because when I see Maegan, I see you.
God Bless You
Doug

my condolences to all,
As a friend of Esme's older brother, and her dad, I got to know Esme in the early 1970's. I will always cherish my memories of her charm, grace, wicked wit, zest for life and the awesome strength of her love for those dear to her. The world is a far better place for those of us so fortunate to have known her.

Esme and Stefan in Ireland 1972/73

Maegan and Ethan, I was shocked to hear that Esme and Stefan have both deceased. First of all I wish to offer you my condolences and secondly may I give you some insight into their time here in Ireland. I had the great pleasure to meet them both in and around 1972/73 when Esme and Stefan came to live in Bangor, Co. Down, Northern Ireland. Esme had met my brother Raymond in the South of Ireland and they had lived there for a time before coming up North. I greatly admired the warm, enthusiastic, and easygoing attitude to life that your mother had and we became friends. Stefan was a great wee lad and enjoyed playing with my daughters Donna and Gillian. Esme and Raymond were young and in love and at the time were quite the "hippies"! They lived here happily for a time, However, Stefan was coming to an age when He would be starting school and I think your mother thought it was time to go back to the U.S.A. They all left here and spent a few months on a working holiday travelling around the various beaches in the Florida area, I think, and then stayed with your Grandparents. Shortly after that Raymond returned home heartbroken and reluctant to speak about the breakup. I'm afraid I did not make any effort to remain in contact. For this I am sorry as I am quite sure we would have enjoyed hearing of each others addiions to our families and their successes. My son Michael was born in 1975. I know you will still be hurting but I can assure you that it will become a little less as time as goes by. Take pleasure in the memories you have and I am sure you will smile each time you remember what your Mother did for you all those years when you were growing up.

Best wishes for the future
Carolyn Revie (nee McMaster)

Dear Mr. Root and dear Ethan,
Please know that I was both shocked and saddened to learn of Esme's passing. Memories of her remain in my heart as I recall the many times she drove us in the jeep on field trips when Ethan was in 2nd grade, oh so many years ago. It was then that she shared days in Ho Ho Kus and realized we could have met then, as I lived in Saddle River. May these days bring you peace and joy in golden memories and love.

Please accept our deepest condolences on the loss of your very special mother. Mitch and I spent many fun times with your mom, and we met her before Ethan was born. We will miss her beautiful smile, her warmth, and her grace. She was so proud of her children, and she was a warm and loving mother. Please let us know when the memorial service will be held in West Palm Beach, as we would like to be there for you. We are so sorry for your loss, and we will miss Esme.

Such a courageous women is missed, and cherished. God's blessings be upon the family, and may his love embrace and provide comfort in the days to come.

Dear Maegan, Ethan and Josh,
We first met Esme after Josh and Maegan became involved in a serious relationship. Intellectual and fun- loving; we immediately liked her and looked forward to spending time with her. We admired the obvious closeness she shared with her children and the way she gently guided them.
Planning the wedding of her beautiful daughter to Josh created memories that we will always cherish. Esme glowed throughout and danced the night away as we all enjoyed the special celebration of Josh and Maegan.
When Esme spoke of her children, her eyes would sparkle. She was so proud of who they were and what they had done. She told us often of the special feelings she had for Josh.
In these last few months, Maegan has shown us that she carries her mother's inner spirit, courage and strength.
May you rest in eternal peace and love Esme and thanks for sharing your family with ours.
Love
Leslyee and Doug

I was touched to read this beautiful remembrance of Esme whom I knew when we were little (and big) girls, because our mothers were good friends and colleagues and we also shared summer camp in Maine. I had not seen her in many, many years but spoke to her after her mother's death and heard about her beloved Franklin House. I'm grateful for a haunting glimpse I got of Maegan on you-tube -- her resemblance to the Esme I remember is so amazing and beautiful and her love of her work is inspiring. My sister Nancy came across the link and shared it with us. I send all my best to all Esme's family. Love, Ellen
