Eugene GOLDBERG Obituary

GOLDBERG, Eugene

Eugene Goldberg, of New York City and Wellington, FL, son of Shirley and Abraham Goldberg of Brooklyn, NY, died at the age of 89 on Thursday, September 11, 2014. Attended NYU and graduated from the New York Maritime Academy, Ft. Schuyler, NY with the rank of Ensign USNR in 1944. He enlisted in the Merchant Marine as a Third Mate and was stationed on ships that supplied the Atlantic and Mediterranean areas during WWII. Eugene finished his tour in 1946 with the rank of Second Mate, Lt. Jr. Grade USNR. Upon leaving the service he joined the family business, THC Systems, Inc., a distributor of domestic chinaware, flatware, glassware and sundries to restaurant and hotel chains. Eugene as CEO, in 1969 changed the company's direction and became the first company of its kind to import hotel ware for the use in the airline industry. Together with his brother Robert they transformed THC Systems into a differentiated multinational firm that served leading companies in the foodservice, restaurant, airline and hospitality industries, among others. As a complement to his corporate activities, Eugene was a world-traveler, noted connoisseur with wide-ranging expertise in wine and art, and an ardent supporter of many charitable societies and foundations, and served on the boards of the Palm Beach Symphony, Morikami Museum, Fort Schuyler Maritime Foundation and Croquet Foundation of America. He is survived by his beautiful and loving wife of 67 years Eleanor Goldberg; his sister-in-law Joan Goldberg; his devoted daughter Celia Zahringer; his beloved grandchildren Dr. James Kessler, Major Peter B. Marks USMC, George J. Zahringer IV, Killian Combs Zahringer and Lauren Turner Zahringer and four great-grandchildren. Friends may visit at the Funeral Home from 06:00 to 09:00 P.M. A 6 years after his sad departure I still remember him, he was a wonderful person, generous also his wife and his beautiful daughter Cici and Lauren. A beautiful family which I had the joy of working with, they made me feel like one more of the family.... Mr Goldberg, I will always have you in my heart and with great respect. Rest in pease.

Just learned of Eugene's death, and send my condolences to the famil. I was honored to serve as his Vice President during the era when we changed the face of the commercial dinnerware industry. Eugene was a visionary, a fine gentleman, and a mentor whose memory I will always cherish.

On behalf of the Croquet Foundation of America and his croquet-playing friends, I wish to send our condolences to Gene's wife and family. While I did not have the honor of knowing him personally, reports from others who did, attest to the fact that he was a great supporter of our sport and a fine and generous gentleman.
