Frank BOSTWICK Obituary

BOSTWICK, Frank Allen
Frank Allen Bostwick, 90, boarded a celestial sailboat for his next adventure on December 16, 2015, disembarking from the home he shared with his beloved son, Mark Allen Bostwick, of Islamorada, Florida in the Keys. Frank's earthly adventures began August 29, 1925, when he was born to Harriet (Allen) and Warren Bostwick, in Chicago, Illinois. Frank was a Navy man who learned to fly, but World War II ended before he graduated from flight school. He returned to Chicago where he graduated from Northwestern University in 1949 with a BA in Journalism. Frank was born a writer, and a short story he wrote in high school about flying was included in the national published anthology, Boy's Life, before he graduated. He was a teacher, an editor, a keeper of journals and a published author. He taught thousands of young adults and not so young adults in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Florida during his career. In Michigan, as a high school English teacher and at Kalamazoo College as an associate professor of English. In Pennsylvania, as a professor at Keystone Junior College. In Florida, at prisons and as the director of Adult Education at the Crestwood Community School, Royal Palm Beach. He was voted Palm Beach County Teacher of the Year while at Crestwood. After his retirement from Crestwood he served as an adjunct professor of English for many years at Palm Beach Community College, where he will always be remembered as "Mr. Bostwick." He was a passionate educator well into his 70's. Frank also headed the Performing Arts League in Royal Palm Beach for several years. Frank was a licensed sea captain and sailing club owner who taught many to sail and made many crossings to the Bahamas. He was an avid cyclist, co-founder of Ray's Ride in Palm Beach, and an active member of the West Palm Beach Bicycle Club. At age 68, Frank rode his bicycle solo from Royal Palm Beach to Sarnia, Canada, a journey he memorialized in his book, Upcountry Odyssey. Frank knew no stranger, only friends who had not yet had the pleasure of his charming acquaintance. His adventures in this life were too numerous to detail in the small space of this tribute. He will be greatly missed by his children, Mark Bostwick and his partner Melanie Antoni, of Islamorada, Florida; Cynthia Bostwick (Linda Ham) of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Melissa Saddler of Boca Raton, Florida, and his honorary daughter, Emily Fritsch (Scott Fritsch) of Kokomo, Indiana. He is also survived by his four beloved grandsons, his nieces, and his countless friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathryn, his parents, his sister, Jean Downing and his cherished sailing sloop, the Lady K. A memorial will be held where stories may be shared and bread will be broken in his honor, at 2:00PM on January 23, at The Islander Restaurant, located on Singer Island at 181 Ocean Ave, Palm Beach Shores, Florida 33404 In lieu of flowers or cards, a donation may be made to the angels known as Visiting Nurses Association & Hospice of the Florida Keys, 92001 Overseas Highway, Tavernier FL, 33070.

Ellen Taylor Freytag, what a nice surprise. I had Mr. Bostwick as a literature teacher at K. 1965-6 Then, for 2 years I worked as his assistant with the Latin American Orientation Program at K. He was my favorite professor and a joy to work with during summers.

So sorry to hear about this. As a 15-year-old high school student, Frank was my mentor when I worked for the Palm Beaches Yacht and Country Club in West Palm Beach, FL. (around 1975) He taught me how to sail and I was able to make a couple of trips over to the Bahamas with him and club members. He is missed.

Mr bostwick was my first journalism teacher at keystone college. He was the one who inspired me to do the most with what I had. He was a wonderful communicator and for years I've been trying to track him down to say thank you. Looks like I was a few years too late. But I hope he knows in heaven how much he meant to me as a teacher. I went on to work for several networks and national television shows as a reporter and won 13 Emmy awards. I only bring it up because none of that would have been possible without Mr bostwick. I always wanted to be a journalist even when I walked into his class for the first time and I learned more there than I did in my entire career. He taught me the basics and the foundation of being a good journalist and for that I thank you sir. Rest in peace.

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won,
[...] But O heart! heart! heart! (Walt Whitman)
I miss you, "witman" and yet I am glad you were spared being part of the on-going shipwreck. Some say we should pray for you, captain, but I say "pray for us, brother".

Frank - my Principal, confidante, and life-long friend . I fondly remember New Year's Eve 2001. My husband had recently passed so kate and he invited my 15 year old son and me to dinner . KATE played the piano for us and at midnight , we all jumped into the same bed singing and watching the ball drop!! He was always there for me with a heart-warming smile . He'll always have a place in my heart!

I just finished reading Upcountry Odyssey. I found this delightful book in a used book store in Madeira Beach, Florida. What a wonderful story. Frank Bostwick lived a life that is an example of how all of us should, open to adventure and willingness to do what our dreams call us to. Thank you, Frank, for sharing your bike travels from Florida to my homestate, Michigan.

The first word which comes to mind in thinking of Frank is "inspiration" To everyone he knew he was that He was always creating never boring which I believe is the purpose for the human spirit. His insight and ability to nail the truth of a situation never ceased to amaze me And so it was the last time I had the pleasure of seeing him when my husband Nick my granddaughter Carly and I visited with Frank and Mark in February of 2013
I was lucky to have known Frank for a very long time almost 45 years He taught me to sail He acted in plays that I directed and he was involved in a school where I taught in Hawley Pa. He sent me quotes by Rumi and Hafez during difficult times of my life. I love you Frank. Ill see you again. Beverly Beers

He was always a dear, charming and enthusiastic person.Frank was a very active member of the cycling community, as well as a past president of the WPB Bicycle Club. We rode a lot of miles together over many years and he was always delightful. I'm honored that I'm one of the people he chose to include in the dedication of "Upcountry Odyssey." The stories I could share of adventures with him on land and sea are far too numerous for these pages. It was wonderful to see him with both Kate and with Mark - he so loved his family.

Frank loved the beach and so did my mom (Kate) and I. This photo was probably from the late 1980s.

I've often heard a person's best legacy is their children. I've had the pleasure of knowing Mark and Melissa for the past several years and I believe it does reveal the special gift's Frank delivered. I also had the privilege to meet Frank on two occasions and both visits left a lasting impression on me. His book "Upcountry Odyssey" has been an inspiration for me and his joyful attitude is one I will always strive to maintain. You will be missed, but not forgotten.

You are so missed, Pop. The house is so lonely without your huge smile and laughter all day long. You were a special light in so many people's lives. But you are dancing with the angels now and in a much better place. I hope that they can keep up! Thank you for life. Thank you for being a wonderful roommate and my best friend. I am so proud to be your son.

I love you, Dad.

Frank was the most motivating person I have ever known. Being friends for over 30 years, we've shared countless conversations, sailings, outings, after school parties in Royal Palm, and dinners with Kate all filled with laughter - especially the summer of 2008 when he gave me sailing lessons on the inter coastal in West Palm Beach. As night Principal of Crestwood Community Middle School, he was loved by all and a daily positive presence in my life. The world has lost one of its best men, and the seas of heaven have gained its greatest captain. See you again my dearest friend and mentor.
